At first glance it seems that The Hatchet is as good as ever!

I am printing it as I type and plan an evening in a comfy chair reading.

It's a good thing it was released today-- it's cold and windy and the perfect night to spend with Lizzie!

i ordered the printed color version from lulu right away -- which i'll probably make a habit of.

i didn't anticipate the cover image, but it's a clever choice, since that is already a "historical" image.

i've just scrolled through the whole as of now. i didn't know kat was doing anything so ambitious -- i'll scrutinize it. offhand, i'll say that could not have been an easy topic.

the creative graphics continue to be...i think the word is "fresh."

i will read every contributor and report back later.

Kat...

Your article about Emma was wonderful! The entire issue is!

Emma has always interested me and I was delighted to see an article about her!

It was very well written and I learned many new things about her!

Those of you who do not take the publication should think about treating yourself... There is new information to be found there and as Kat pointed out, new photos! Many of which most of us have never seen before!

$20 is a fair price for it and you can send a check or money order if you do not wish to use a CC via the Internet.

That is a marvellous idea!

You will not regret it, I can promise you that!

It is nice, because even if you subscribe later in the year, you get the full calendar year you subscribed in. If you wait until July you can still download the issues published earlier that year.

It's tempting to do as then you would have more than one delicious issue to read!

That article is really good-- the whole issue always is. I have not gotten much of it read... 'That darn Kat' (pun intended) has me hooked with her Emma article and I have been doing some on line searching for more information about the places she lived... Specifically The Minden apartment building. I would love to see some interior photos of the place. Those old apartment buildings are always so wonderful.

Also, I have been invited to visit those who I Interviewed over the phone.
We are looking forward to meeting.
I have been very lucky in all the people who I have met because of this case! Blessed, actually.

Just finished reading Kat's marvelous article on Emma. She has gathered all the known facts and with thoughtful surmises has breathed life into the little known elder sister. It was well researched and Kat is to be applauded for her personal contact with the current occupants of the houses where Emma stayed.

Thanks for a great job, Kat! I'm sure it will be a reference point for future readers who desire to find out information about Emma.

And to those who don't subscribe to the Hatchet - GO DO IT! You are missing out on articles like this which expand the knowledge of the Borden case.

I LOVE THE HATCHET!

Kudos to Stef -- and to all the contributors who make it such a treasure.

And I can only echo what previous posters have said about Kat's article in this issue. Her research is amazing! She has truly illuminated shadowy Emma. And those beautiful photographs of Emma's environs dating from the time of the murder until her death complement the text perfectly.

I'd just like to post one more "Nice article, Kat" to the list.

I only wish somebody in Fairhaven would buy that house and fix the front steps. . .

You mean these steps? Yes, I agree, it is a disgrace AND a dangerous thing as well. I had the distinct impression there was someone living in there. They must be poor or really old, don't you think? Maybe you can get Fairhaven to fix them? It has to be some sort of code violation, doesn't it?

That photograph of those dilapidated steps is very lovely in it's own way... It looks like the steps to an abandoned house you may have found in the country somewhere.. I know they are unsightly but the image is oddly relaxing!

Unfortunately it's not out in the country somewhere. It's right on a heavily traveled street two blocks from some of the most beautiful examples of public architecture you can find in New England.

There was a very old man living there with a middle-aged reclusive son. The father died and I think the son is still there, but from what I hear he's got problems of one sort or another.

Yea, Boo Radley. I've always liked old delapitated houses. Like Audrey said there is a charm to them. If those steps could only speak, the tales they could tell...

I remember seeing the Brownell house (from the road) in the company of Mr. Rebello. I wish it could be fixed up. I didn't get many 'vibes' from the Brownell house like I did from Riverby. THAT house had vibes...good, peaceful ones.

Some old houses give me good vibes, like a long lost friend that I want to move into and take care of - bring it back to it's former glory. Other old houses give me a back case of the creeps like something I want to run from.

What breaks my heart is seeing some old, beautiful Victorian house sitting in the middle of a farm field all by itself weathered and slowly falling apart. It seems to say to me, "Help me, please don't leave." There are a lot of houses like that in California.

Christopher helped me with some of the Fairhaven section of my article, and Joe Carlson helped me with a great census search. I thank them in my BIO.
Of course I usually run a couple of things past Harry to see if they float.

BTW: It was the Moses Delano house. Mrs. Brownell was a widow, living with her brother Moses at Green Street when Emma stayed there that summer with Mrs. Allen Brownell's (Rebecca) daughter Helen.
Their brother Joshua lived next door.

I beg many pardons. I knew it was really the Delano house, because you have told me that before...I just wasn't thinking when I posted...sorry. I start thinking about my last trip to Fall River and meeting up with Mr. Rebello, and I get all excited.

I've just started reading the current Hatchet, and only have gotten through Kat's splendid article on Emma. WOW! Good going, Kat! I'm going to read it over a few times to absorb it all.
It certainly is one of the finest articles ever written on the case, and I feel that this piece will become a classic in the writings on the Bordens.
Now I can't wait to read the rest of the issue!

Kat - Your article on Emma was fantastic!. Thank you for doing it! We know so little about Emma. You managed to put together her history as we know it, find new things!, and fill in some gaps with very logical possibilities.

Your photos are GREAT! The hard work you put into your research really shows. If Stef gave out prizes, you should get a Golden Pear award. I agree, it is a classic piece that will be referred to often.

I hadn't even heard of 'Riverby' before. And that shot of The Minden is gorgeous!

Your work on the New Hampshire house was soooooooo good! You found some previously published outright lies, and got the truth about that published at last. We're gonna have to start calling you Lois Lane! Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!

I enjoyed Doug Walter's piece on Officer Doherty & Bridget. I thought he did an excellent job especially with creating Doherty's personality. I thought it was a charming piece. I hope you continue these pieces, Doug!

The Translation was great. I hope that's going to be a regular.

kat's article on emma is the best bio on emma yet. and particularly well-written. somehow i didn't realized she moved around quite so much -- though i've always thought of her almost as a "homeless" wandering sort of person. i suppose another way of saying it is that she never could make the adjustment.

I am still waiting for my copy from Lulu.com. I ordered it on the 4th, but it has yet to arrive. I need to just read it online I guess. I was hoping to avoid the printing expense and hassle, but the time delay is nearly as frustrating. I have loved my other two Lulu copies however. They are a very pristine presentation of all of the good works contained within. I am trying to be patient...I am just not doing a very good job of it.

Kat, your article on Emma is absolutely AWESOME! I could not stop reading the article until I had finished it. You brought life to Emma and insight as to how her life was mostly likely affected by the slaughter of her father and stepmother. Thank you for an outstanding job.

Well after getting my first issue I can see why you all are so anxious for each issue! I haven't had much time to read lately (We are in the middle of moving offices and work and I fall asleep reading early at night!) but I did finish the article on Emma. It was great!
I just love this group and am learning so much from all you experts. I remember I was hesitant to post when I first joined because I didn't know a whole lot. You all are very gracious at teaching us! Thanks! Will try to post more over the weekend!

I just downloaded my copy of The Hatchet last night and still haven't finished reading it all yet. I thoroughly enjoyed Kat's piece on Emma and Doug's piece on Bridget and Doherty. Oh, and of course Sherry's piece on Bridget in the kitchen, my Irish grandmother used to make a wonderful cornbeef and cabbage though not with an orange added to the mix, sounds like a nice addition.

Thank you very much FairhavenGuy, I'm really looking forward to reading Kat's story on Emma. It sounds like it's going to be a great article to read. I'm hoping that it will lift my spirits up now that I found out that Andy Roddick just pulled out of the Las Vegas Tennis Channel Open and now I won't be able to see him play.

I did get the Feb. issue of the Hatchet and enjoyed the article on Emma. I thought it was sad when her cousin Orrin came and told her that Lizzie was dead. Poor Emma, she didn't last long after that news. I wonder what Emma would have thought had she lived longer and found out that Lizzie left her nothing in her will? Lizzie did seem to have some spitefulness in her. I wonder why she left Orrin nothing and yet, Emma did? Did Emma leave anything to Grace Howe? Or was that just Lizzie? I wonder if the family split down the middle after the two parted ways?

I am happy to announce that all the computer problems have been dealt with and that I have ordered my February Hatchet!

And it is now 3/10, and I am reading it on my lunch break. I'll add my bouquets concerning Kat's dreamy account of the life and times of Miss Emma L. Borden. I only wish there had been something of the unfortunate incident involving Miss Alice Russell; I would like to have read's Kat's conjecture as to the thoughts passing through Emma's mind when she learned her dear friend had spoken about that silly misunderstanding in the kitchen!

The back cover is genius. I can't wait to continue reading on the way home on the subway to see what looks this splendid volume gets.
