Martin Gardner, a writer on mathematics, science and many other things, died on Saturday, May 22. He wrote many books debunking pseudoscience and other quackery.

In my opinion, he was a national treasure. We need more like him.

Dennis Hopper died of prostate cancer this morning.

Ali-Ollie Woodson, who led the legendary Motown quintet The Temptations in the 1980s and '90s and restored them to their hit-making glory with the song "Treat Her Like A Lady," has died. He was 58.

Dennis Hopper was my favorite maniac/psychpath actor. No one can scare the hell out of a cactus quite like he did.

I didn't know Art Linkletter had died. I remember my mother watching "Queen for a Day", then his show after that. He certainly did live a long life.

Jimmy Dean! Well, there goes a legend. I dunno - sometimes big celebrities seem invincible, and it really hits home with me as to how we all go eventually.

Through the several funerals I've been involved with the past couple years, it has also hit home with me that "you can't take it with you". Ha - you sure can't. So these Andrew Bordens and people who keep accumulating money (especially unscrupulously) and don't enjoy themselves with it or don't give to a person or organization that is in need I don't understand.

I think Lizzie had the right idea (except for possibly killing). She knew how to live with her money. She gave to needy people while she was living. She was generous and loved to give presents. And she kept a goodly sum back to make sure she was taken care of.

On the brighter side I guess Gary Coleman's widow sold photos of him dying and in death to a major tabloid. After a person is "gone", for ones that loved him to see photos later on of him dead (whether they went to an open casket funeral or if they just live on their memories of him when alive), can be very destructive for some to see.

I took photos of my brother at his funeral. It was the first time I'd ever done such a thing. I did it because his death was totally sudden, and my other brother didn't come and my mom didn't come (she was hospitalized - it almost killed her). So I thought they'd maybe like to see the last photo of him.

Never again will I do such a thing. It took a few months for me to get my pictures printed, and when I saw him in those photos it took my grief back to just about the night I got The Phone Call.

Also, I think funeral homes may use different lighting in their rooms, so the person looks really good. The photos I took of him with a flash, his face was getting purple. I was sickened. I had nightmares for months every night. My daughter was kind enough to take the pictures, and the negatives, and seal them in an envelope that I put in his funeral box.

Funny, years ago it was common practice for the family to have a photo of the deceased in death, and they made stuff out of the person's hair. Maybe we don't talk about death enough in our society. It's like we ignore it. We'll say, "Some day if something happens to me ..." What do we mean 'IF"? I wonder if the Victorians were better able to handle a death in the family with their ways of mourning.

That's a good question and I think death in Victorian times was viewed differently than now. With short life expectancies, primitive medical care, rampant diseases, lack of immunizations, etc., it was a regular occurrence. No wonder they developed all those rituals and superstitions such as draping black over mirrors and long mourning periods.

I think you're right, kssunflower. When I read a book about the olden days, it's horrible how many children died so early. I guess they used their customs to remember them. I don't know the reason for covering the mirrors. Was it something to do with the spiritworld?

Thanx for the link, Harry. I thought some on there had already passed on. Tom Bosley doesn't look good at all. He looks a lot like Ed McMahon. It is amazing how many are 80+ and are still active and lookin' good.

I didn't know about Gloria Stewart or Kevin Mccarthy either. I remember watching Maccarthy in that movie about aliens when I was a kid.

I once had the pleasure of seeing/hearing him in person. He had a strong, memorable voice and was quite the reserved gentleman.

She had a fantastic voice.

I know I'm getting old when I remember Leslie Nielson as Francis Marion in Walt Disney's The Swamp Fox (circa 1959). Ouch!

I remember Lesie Nielsen in an episode of the Untouchables with Robert Stack before they were both in airplane. Two serious actors doing comedy.

My two favorite parts of that movie is when Stack almost runs down that guy on the bicycle and with the guy yelling at him he keeps driving as if nothing happened.

Then when the plane is coming in and someone says to turn the runway lights on and Stack tells out "NO" Thats exactly what they'll expect us to do." Stack has a classic expresion on his face when says that, that makes it even more funny.

I remember Nielsen in a movie years ago where a bunch of people are out in the wilderness and he keeps calling down the party leader, claiming he doesn't know what he is doing. In the movie Nielsen is not in his right mind and he fights a bear.

Swiss tenor Hugues Cuénod died either Friday or Monday at the age of 108! He made his Met debut at 84, the oldest singer to do so, then or since.

When did Jill Clayburgh die? I'm stunned.

She died on November 5th of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, from which she had suffered for more than two decades, according to Wikipedia.
