Death of Evan Hunter/Ed McBain

According to the morning papers, Hunter died yesterday at his home in Connecticut. He was 78 and suffered from throat cancer. While I enjoyed his books very much, his take on Lizzie was, IMHO, a tad overfanciful. His real name was Salvatore Albert Lombino (which I think is a lot nicer name than the featureless "Evan Hunter"). He was an incredibly prolific writer, having penned more than 50 books. His work included "The Blackboard Jungle" and the Hitchcock screen treatment of "The Birds," which was based on a Daphne du Maurier story. At his death, he had one more Ed McBain 87th Precinct novel in the pipeline. It's to be published in the fall. Sic transit gloria mundi... He'll be missed.
