What is the term for a real klunky car?

Like a Hoospie??? Something like that...

how about a "Jalopy" Auds?? "an old, dilapidated car" oui?

It is not jalopy... It sounds like "hoo-something"

This is it:

Hoopty: Car of dubious quality, usually a POS.
Example: You see Mike's 69 Impala? Yah, till he gets some body work done it'll be a hoopty.

OHMaGosh, who speaks like that?
What language?
How long has this been going on?

My brain actually hurts after reading some of that slang. What planet did that language originate on?? I'm going to go sit in a quiet corner with my book about Sisyphus and hope the pain subsides soon.

That slang reminds me of the movie Airplane where Barbara Billingsly (the Beaver's TV mother) interprets the jive talk of the passenger.

Audrey, I had old roommates from Michigan who told me about hooptys. The people they knew who would drive a hoopty would refer to their homes as a quizot. I think it must be a regional thing?

The term was used to me by my son Alax. he and his friend had traveled to a town about an hour from here on Saturday night and it broke down causing him to have to call Theebmonique (her # was in my cell phone address book) as they could get a hold of no one else asking her to send me an SOS email. (We are a cell phone using family with a fax machine on our home phone line)

Anyway-- When he came home he said the car was NOT a "Hoopty" and therefore they had no expectations of car trouble. (When I asked him why they traveled so far in a car that was likely to not make the trip!)

This might apply to Lizzie:

femalien: When a female goes completely psycho.
Example: When she went femalien, I thought she was going to kill me.

And this doesn't apply--Lizzie was always generous:

flea: Someone who does not tip or tips very poorly. Las Vegas gambling term. A flea will almost never get special favors from the house. Cocktail waitresses will stop offering drinks.
Example: Guy's a flea. Won ten thousand and didn't tip anyone.

Andrew probably had fleas.


I'm really not a happy bunny with some of these terms.

Then there is a lemon, which is a car the poor quality of which is not necessarily apparent visually.

The problem is slang is that is doesn't last, or its meaning changed.
In the 1950s people would say "I bombed that test" (meaning they did terrific). By the 1960s the meaning was the reverse.
Do they still say somebody "went ape"?

Glad you're back to Hot-lanta, Haulover. Anyhow, I think it was Perry Como who sang a song called "Hoopty-Doo". I wonder if he was singing about a hoopty or a polka?

I always thought "hoopty" was king of ghetto slang. I think I first heard it in my ghetto highschool in my ghetto town. I did not know, however, that it only applied to cars. Seems I've been using my slang incorrectly...a terrible abomination for one who likes to consider herself a writer from time to time.
