Did anyone see that show on the newest info on the search for Amelia Earhart last night?
It might have been a repeat. But no one had mentioned to me this news at how close they say they are to actually finding her.

Do you have more details about the show? What did they suggest was the resolution?

If you go back to their main site, there are a number of discussions on the more recent theories and research on her and Noonan.

They found that with certain equiptment they could figure out where the last few radio broadcasts were coming from and that they were flying a "ladder" pattern trying to find the island and were most probably between 50 and 100 miles of Howland, and just ran out of gas.
They think her plane is down about 17,000 feet (that's 3 miles!) and they intend to find it. They are so sure they will find it that they wouldn't give it's location where they think it is.

An interesting Canadian document surfaced recently which gave them enough info to proceed with further testing of their hypothesis.

I don't know if it is the same program I saw or not, but it sounds like it. They used equipment to figure out how close Amelia was when the signal was received in the program I saw. They figured it out by using the strength of the signal, and they tried to duplicate that transmission to determine her location. It has been awhile since I saw that one, but I did think that they may not have been as conclusive as they claimed to be if it is the same one.

It sounds the same. They interviewed the pilot who flies into and out of the mountainous regions in Papua New Guina, right?
They sounded sure enough so that they would not give out any coordinates and were going to try to do a salvage search I think.
I thought it might be old news. Thanks for the response. I have a casual interest in the mystery. I thought more members here did too.

I too have a casual interest in Amelia's disappearance, but, not having seen the show, don't really have anything to add. The last TV show I had seen on her had people that said she was captured by the Japanese and executed as a spy.

If this is the same show that I seen awhile back they flew an airplane high enough up that it was the same distance away from the ground as the ocean surface is from the ocean bottom. That way they got an idea of how small the plane would seem from such long distance away.

I remember the one years ago that was on the news when someone claimed that the plane had crashed on an island. He searched the island and found a bottle cap from the same kind of medication that Amelia took, a shoe that he claimed the same kind that Amelia wore and what was supposed to be a piece of metal from the plane. They found out later that the shoe was 2 sizes out (I think it was also 10 years too new)and the piece of metal did not match that type of plane.

I mean even if the shoe was the right size and if the piece of metal did match the plane. Do you mean to tell tell me that he could find all that, includind the cap from her medicine bottle, but he can't find the plane?

I'm not sure about the part where you say you thought they flew as high as the ocean was deep, tho.

If I remember right they skydived out of the plane to look at the distance on the way down. They talked about how strong the radio signal was when they heard them on the radio from Howland island. From this they were trying to figure out where they would have been, they thought they were close.

Look how long it took to find the Titanic, considering how much bigger it is than the plane. Also considering that they had the longitude and latitude for the Titanic. Amelia was lost.

There is a good book called "Amelia Earhart, The Mystery Solved" by Elgen M. and Marie K. Long that I enjoyed reading. The authors tried to track Emelia's route by flying it and think they solved it.

There is also another book called "Witness to The Execution, The Odyssey of Emelia Earhart" by T.C. Buddy Brennan. This one I couldn't really swallow but worth reading.

A few years ago I thumbed through a book at a book store on her case and it had a photo of an Electra (the plane not the Buick) wrecked in among some trees on what looked like a tropical island. It was discounted so I should have bought it. Can't recall the title.

Personally I think she ran out of gas looking for Howland and ditched into the ocean. But who knows. Bob Ballard (Titanic, Bismark discoverer) said he was going to look for it. Whatever happened to his plans? Very interesting mystery.

What are the dates of the books you mention?
If they are very current, they might be interesting...

The first book by the Longs is dated 1999 and the Execution book by Brennan is older, 1988. They are not really recent material but they make good reading especialy the Long's book, "Emelia Earhart, The Mystery Solved." I would not pay full price for either but on ebay or a used book store it might be a deal.

The 'Tighar' group is the one that found the medicine bottle and the shoe. I hadn't heard the shoe turned out to be wrong. They believe she landed on Nicomororo (baaaad spelling, I'm sure). They went on several expeditions to the island. They showed a grave, I think, thinking it might be Earhart buried in it, but it wasn't. They found some little space someone made out of metal, and thought it was a piece of her Lockheed Electra. That was highly debatable. They had a news conference when they got back from finding the shoe and medicine cap and I think they proclaimed the mystery solved, and they were gonna go back again.

They have an interesting historical paper on their website sometimes. There was a 2-hour show hosted by Lindsay Wagner that featured that group and their findings.

The Japanese theory keeps hanging in there because there are people who swear they saw a lady flier get captured and died.

The show Kat opened this thread with is the newest one I've seen. I think I caught it on The Travel Channel. It was interesting. But I don't see how they can really totally rely on how they are going about it. They can only approximate at best, I'd think. They had a woman pretending to be Earhart talking over the airwaves.

Did Ballard say he was going after it? Maybe he's playing it smart and waiting to see what these latest guys come up with. When he went out looking for The Titanic, a lot of the area had already been searched by a previous person.

I read a fantastic biography on her a few years back, called something about "Wings".

Susan Clark played her in a made for tv movie in the 1970's. It was all right. Diane Keaton played her in a tv movie not all that long ago. That was all right. She had the haircut. That's half the battle.
