Lizzie Borden Society Forum

While taking my Neice who is 5 to the local library ( the kids section )
I saw out of the corner of my eye the words Lizzie Borden.
I picked up the book from the shelf & was amazed that it would be in the Kids section.
So of course I had to check it out.
When I got home & thumbed thru it before reading, I automatically saw all kinds of errors.
Inside the front cover in the books description it say's " you can see the "Axe " and judge for yourself if its the murder weapon "
Also the illistrations & photos in the book are ridiculous.
There is two photos on one page, one of Jennings, and right beside it one of Bridget & The caption underneath reads Andrew Borden & his wife Abby.
Further down in the book there is a photo of Abby & the caption says
Bridget Sullivan. there are many other small mistakes in the book.
I wonder if there was an Editor at all ??
The only good thing I saw was the front cover has a beautiful illistration of Lizzie in the Sitting Room. the artist did a wonderful job.
I wonder how these books, with the facts all wrong even make it to the press??
If you get time or have a chance, check this book out & have a good laugh. its worth just seeing Lizzie on the front cover
I'm tempted to correct all the mistakes with pencil.

Maybe you should post your review in Amazon or Barnes & Noble. But beware, rumor has it that they delete any review that isn't quite favorable!

There is a market (libraries?) for books on "popular subjects". Any subsidy for so-so products will be shown by the quality of the product.
Its like those jobs where you get paid even if you do little (corporate world, but some say government jobs). Both are "who you know, not what you know".

I believe there were some printing /information problems with that book...on some of the editions anyway. I have been in contact with Ms. Rappaport in the past and she is a very nice lady. I was just amazed at the poor edit job.
I'm sure the Author was probably mortified when She saw it.
I wonder why they dident do a recall or something?

What did you think of the front cover ?
I think they really did Lizzie justice, at least there.

I think there is more than one cover. One of my copies has the one with Lizzie standing by the sofa in the sitting room...she has a white dress on. I believe it is Kat who has a different cover version ? I will have to check my autographed copy when I get back to my classroom.

I think the covers are the same but there are 2 editions somewhat close together in time. I think they reissued the newer version when they discovered the mistaken photo captions. At least those were fixed. I didn't read the book tho. It was Stefani's and she has it now.

BTW: It's a wonderful cover!

Ever notice how many editions there are of a book that is about 100 years old, and the copyright has expired? Its a money-making scheme.
They know there is a market for "classic" works. ("The Jungle" or "The Invisible Man"). SO whoever can put out a reprint for the lowest cost will gain the bigger market share. IMO This doesn't cover the books that have high price tags because they are required reading for a small minority. See the current edition of E.H. Porter's "The Fall River Tragedy".

Students are required to buy and read the book, they probably are not fanatics on the subject. Or why used books are on the market.

Andrew J. Borden would have understood this.
