Does anybody know if Lizzie volunteered? I mean like at the local library reading books to kids, or with the red cross and the like? I haven't read anything or found anything on that. Looks like that would be what a well brought up well to do woman would have been doing, espeically since she wasnt that fond of Abby. That would get her out of the house to where she wouldn't have to deal with abby or look or talk to her.

If you did your homework you would know.
Try David Kent's "40 Whacks" or Arnold Brown's book.

Lizzie had some outside interests like the secretaryship of a church group. Remember she said she had roll call the Sunday after the murders and that is why she was in town over that fateful weekend?

Q. Why did you not go to Marion with the party that went?
A. Because they went sooner than I could, and I was going Monday.
Q. Why did they go sooner than you could; what was there to keep you?
A. I had taken the secretaryship and treasurer of our C. E. society, had the charge, and the roll call was the first Sunday in August, and I felt I must be there and attend to that part of the business.

She was on the Woman's Board of the Hospital too, but only for a year or so, I think.
She was named to that Board the same day as the *daylight robbery* at the house. Strange coincidence?

I am going by my some what rusty memory here so, I hope I have this half way right. Wasn't Lizzie also involved in some sort of fruit and basket thing for the hospitals? Also, I recall reading an account another woman gave, I *think* the woman who visited her in jail and wrote about it. Anyway, I recall her talking about Lizzie helping to feed the poor at either Christmas or Thanksgiving.

I wonder if someone was jealous of Lizzie and did this as a payback? (Based on human nature.)

That is very interesting. I never knew she did anything like that. That would be worth looking up. I wonder if she gave away all her old books to the library and gave some clothes to the salvation army and such.
