Antiques Road Show Orlando!

Whew! I didn't want to talk about my invitation to go to the Roadshow today in Orlando, because I didn't have a ticket- but I was assured that I would get in as the person who pushed a ticket-holder's wheelchair. I wanted to wait to see if I did get in.
So I did get in the door!
We had lucky parking and only had to cross a street on the Convention Centers own grounds to get in.
We entered the 12 noon line, and did one of those Disney-Lines...that's where you are within the ropes and keep doubling back. There was about 2 hours of that and then triage. That is where they look at what you have and give you a ticket for the booth that corresponds to the item you brought.
I brought no item- I was with 2 friends who had tickets, each entry ticket allows you an appraisal of 2 items... and only one of them brought items- so she had 4 items, basically.
By the ime we got thru triage a person decided to lead us to the area to wait in- and we crossed thru lines inside the appraisal area and I was being very careful not to run the wheelchair footrests up the back of anyone's Achilles tendon (which is excrutiating, btw). I wasn't exactly paying attention to my surroundings at that time, because maneuvering was very hard. Finally, as I'm chattering at my friend, I had to stop because a gap closed and I found that we were standing not 12 feet behind someone whose appraisal was being filmed! Not just filmed, but filmed with what seemed a million cameras! I had been standing there right behind this in sightline line of the cameras!
Jeesh! I froze because I didn't know what to do!
But no one said "Shush" and no said "Move it!" so finally after standing there a gap opened and I forged ahead pushing the chair.
But that was when I finally knew I was there! Yay!
We were led to "Collectables" and got the cool "Toy Guy." He was in an Hawaiin shirt and greeted us with "Aloha!"
He looked at 3 out of 4 of my friends items and needless to say she was disppointed to find the maximum worth, in today's market, of anything she brought was about $250 for a Daisey butter churner. Apparently it was worth more 6 or 7 years ago and for some reason I couldn't hear- the price had actually decreased.
The guy Gary Sohmers was great- and allowed me to take his photo. All the signs say "No" but he said "Yes."
The other recognizeable personality was right next to him. I don't know his name, sorry. You see him in the picture.
Then we headed to the 2nd category area- my friend had a collection of boxes- and the appraiser was a young cute British guy who was unimpressed with aything my friend had brought- but very courteous. While she was unwrapping items to show him, I noticed a man passed between me and the person behind me saying" excuse me" and it was a KENO BROTHER! Wow! I took his picture without asking and then we were on the way out.
All done - waiting was about 2 hours and the appraisal area took about 20 minutes.
It was a
blast!
My friend was a bit bummed, but I was thrilled!

I had to keep reminding myself that she did not get near any appraisal she liked. But oh it was exciting!
I have 7 or 8 pictures so I need some time to load them here if you'all don't mind waiting. Thanks!

Upon entering- this is a view of where we came from- back towards the entrance doors.
We were lining up in the 12 o'clock line.

There's lots of pictures in line because I didn't think I'd get to take any once we entered the
inner sanctum.
There were big monitors on the walls with closed captions of past shows.

More line. Everyone was very polite and courteous.

Most of the experience was shuffling along in line- so you get to shuffle along with us!

Remember- at least you are in Orlando!
This is taken from the other direction- this line closest to the camera goes in behind the wall and that's the actual appraisal area.

Triage at the end of the line.
I call this "the home stretch!"
We're about to pass thru there and turn right behind that wall.

They brought a camera out to film this guy but there was no announcer or spokesman so I don't know why.
We are about to enter! Yay!

YAY!
The real deal!

The end.

That's really cool! You do the most exciting things! I like watching that show, had no idea that it took so long to get into one though, thanks for sharing!!! It's amazing the things I learn on this forum!!! 8-)

Wow, that must have been an interesting experience and not something most of us ever get the chance to do.
Thanks for the great photos and the stories that went with them.
Maybe we'll get to see you on the air when the show makes it to TV. Cool!

Thanks you guys!
I did not see much Disney stuff. They gave us a magazine and there on the back were Disney things.
We have the original EPCOT booklet from the first month it opened- but it's not in great shape. Stef has a Mouseketeer hat from way long ago- 2 people were wearing those and the Roadshow took their picture.
~ ~ ~ ~
There were exit areas where a person was invited to record their Road Show experience. My friends said I should go do that but I said I was not officially there.
This is the back of the booklet.

Oh, I so enjoyed your post, Kat! Now, I thought you got thru it in a fairly timely manner, considering the crowds those things produce.
Too bad you didn't have something to be appraised.
So exciting! And catching one of those twins' for a photo! (They are so cute!)
Thanks for sharing the experience and the wonderful photos! I'm glad you got a chance to go.

Sounds like a fun experience, thanks for sharing it with us, Kat. Too bad your friend didn't have anything of great value. I've seen a couple of those episodes where someone doesn't realize the worth of their item and are very pleasantly surprised. I guess I don't watch the show enough, who are the Keeno brothers?
Posted: Tue Jul 03, 2007 3:43 am
by Kat
They recently had their own show
Find! on PBS.
They are cute twins who evaluate furniture on the Roadshow (and all kinds of things on their show).
"Sound familiar?" as Craig Ferguson would say!

Very cool! Looks just like on TV, hehehehe!

Thanks for sharing those pictures and your Roadshow experience!!! The Antiques Roadshow is one of my all-time favorites!!! It must have been a blast to be there in person... By the way, the person in the picture behind Gary Sohmers is Noel Barrett, I believe - tHe's the he other guy who appraises the toys & kitsch stuff.
A few years ago, I was returning from Las Vegas, (to Boston, where the Roadshow is based), and I looked around the airport terminal and realized that there were several appraisers from the Roadshow waiting as well! I chatted with Gary Sohmers for a bit. Then, I sat next to one of the art appraisers for the flight. It was a story to tell, but not like *actually* being at the show, Kat!!

Do you know when that episode will air, Kat? I'd like to watch it.
Did you remember to bring your sun glasses? I mean all TV stars need their shades.

I'll bet it was fun being there. Hope it comes through California one day.

Our member Eric attended one of these in Phili and it was almost 6 months before his show aired: I think January to August?
kfactor- anything you can share about your conversation on the plane - or what else Gary Sohmers does for fun? (He's very vibrant in person and I believe he lives in Massachusetts?)

Oh yes I had on my shades- at least until we entered the inner sanctum!

Yeah - Gary Sohmers does live in the Boston area - I believe he has a shop somewhere.
I just remember that he seemed very approachable and nice, and I just said "Hi" and told him that I was a big fan of Antiques Roadshow. He thanked me for saying so. I asked when the Las Vegas show would air, and he wasn't sure. He was just a very regular guy in a Hawaiian shirt! Gary did mention something about having met Noel Barrett somewhere and eating at a restaurant that served exotic game - not sure if it was in Vegas or not.
By the way, the Keno brothers had left Vegas earlier because they were competing in some kind of race (never found out what kind of race).
I tried not to bother the art appraiser I sat next to on the plane by talking about how much I love the show, art, etc.

She was very gracious, however when I just mentioned I am a fan.

I'm glad you had a pleasant experience with Gary Sohmers, Kfactor. He sounds like the kind of you you would like to sit down and have a talk with. Some personalities you see on the air are just as kind and sweet in person as they are on TV while others can be two-faced; kind and sweet on air but arrogant and "veddy veddy up posh and snooty" off. Tell me, Kfactor, did Gary look smaller and younger off camera than he does on?
I always liked that show. Too bad so many of those people have to find out, on air, that their prized doo-dad is worthless.

I cringe when that happens. I feel for them.

I'll have to keep an eye out for you, Kat, when that show comes on. I'll have to get some blank VHS tapes and some popcorn. I've only been on TV twice in my whole life but never even saw the tapes. Bummer.

Oh well.

I think Mr. Gary looked about the same as he does on TV - maybe a tad smaller.

Ooooohhh...how lucky! My husband and I are dying to go to the Roadshow. It's supposed to be in Baltimore soon...or might have already filmed there....I need to pay more attention to what's going on.
We have a painting from 1804 we'd like to get appraised.
I love the pic of one of the twins...I think they are absolutely adorable!!!
Posted: Tue Jul 10, 2007 10:55 pm
by Kat
Actually I hope I'm not on!
Having some notice is one thing- being surprised is another!

The twins were not far apart, physically, and I hoped to get them both in a photo, but the one kept being filmed with the same person and large piece of furniture the whole time we were in that interior area. (Not the one seen in my pic.)
Maybe it was a red hot item!
Also I was told by my friends that the camera crew can do close-ups of the item or personalities if there is something unusual going on behind the scene- which I think I qualify for.

I'm glad to know that they're still making new episodes. They seem to repeat a lot.

Our Stuart tells me *My* Roadshow is on next week!
The one where I am leaning over the wheelchair trying to ham my way into a shot...
Really- I was trying not to run up someone's Achilles tendon in a crowd- and if I do show up on camera, it's because I was trying not to maim the person in front of us!

I was only there as a *guest.*
Anyone have the times?
Thanks for the advance notice Stuart!

Would this be airing on PBS? That may sound a stupid question, but at least one other network carries it. I pick up the PBS from Buffalo, NY---so I hope they show it concurrently---Stuart's in NY state, so let's hope so!

Yes, Tina-Kate, it is on PBS. It will be next Monday, January 28, at 8pm.
We'll have to keep a watch in the background during the appraisals as well to see if we can spot Kat in line!
I love watching the folks in the background, to see what they are carrying, and if they are being nosy and eavesdropping on the appraisal going on!

O excellent! Thanks, Stuart! Let's hope we can spot Kat.
Kat---do you remember the item being presented when you leaned into the shot?

It wasn't on purpose!! I didn't know what I was doing...
Anyway Thanks Stuart!!!
No I actually don't know what they were filming but it was a Keno Brother and they did it the whole time we were there, so it might be Big, or something they want to teach us.
I have on a long black sleeveless dress, with white flowers on it. Actually, you'all saw me in it at The Rolling Rock, Fall River pics!

I'm actually hoping this was Part 1 of a 2 parter. They did not show either Keno brother. Sometimes they do two parts, so I will also check it out for next week.
It was a very good show & I feasted my eyes on the section re Tiffany glass.
I think I caught a glimpse of Kat from behind near the end of the show when the announcer said stay tuned to see the candid clips. The lady in question had hair like Kat & was wearing a long black sleeveless dress.
I stayed tuned to watch the American Experience show re Mary Pickford. I always found it amusing that "America's Sweetheart" was born on University Avenue in Toronto. There's a placque there at the site where her family house once stood.

Thanks for the great pictures. That is such a great show. However I & probably most of us will be looking to see if we can spot you, and not the show itself.

I don't think I was on. Just before the personal stories photo booth tho I did leave the room for a sec.
It's in 3 parts now.
Next Monday for sure and maybe the Monday after that?
I was very glad they showed our Morse Museum. I go there all the time to see the Tiffany stuff. I've been going to the museum since high school- when it was located in another place.
I think I posted pics from their brochure or a postcard- on a topic I started awhile ago. It was the Chapel from the Columbia Exposition of 1893, designed by Tiffany. It's much more incredible in real life. I take all my Florida visitors there! Our Lizzie probably saw it!

I JUST SAW KAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She was pushing a woman in a wheelchair behind a gentleman that was having a deed with Ben Franklin's signature bein appraised.
Now, back to the TV for further sightings!

Oh that was so much fun! Stef called me and said "There you are!"
Oops, it wasn't a Keno Brother- sorry- just goes to show how preoccupied I was. I think I was like a deer caught in headlights!
That is so funny!
Anyway, they said individual appraisals will be on their website, so now that our Stuart identified here what the object was- I think it can be re-watched on their site!

I got to see you too Kat! I typed in "Antigue road show orlando 2007" and when I got there I went down the line of things shown on that show till I found the Benjamin Franklin signature on the land deed and played the video and sure enough there you were! lol Too cool!

They said that next week's episode would be from Orlando also. So, we'll all have to keep our eyes peeled for another "cameo appearance" by Kat!

Thanks shakiboo.. I got the URL from your instructions:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/archive/200702A25.html
Now I see it in slower motion there is the point where my friend tells me something- I lean to hear over the noise- we are on TV- I look- and then under my breath I whisper "
What do you want me to do now?"
I was answered "Whatever you want."
I said "You are in the shot too."
She said "Let's go." Or something like that. That was the point where my mind froze temporarily.

I SAW KAT! I SAW KAT! Hehehehe...
They repeated it last night & I kept my eyes open this time. It was close to the beginning, so that was good...didn't have to watch the whole thing over again.
It was almost split-second tho. It almost looked like you ducked to get out of the shot.
I'm pleased now...doesn't take much, huh?
I'll be watching Part III tonite to see if we might catch a glimpse again.
