I have mostly every Hatchet ever issued, in print form.

With every issue, I am more and more bewildered how little discussion goes on this site about the excellent articles that appear in the Hatchet. This makes me wonder how many on the forum subscribe to the Hatchet.

Some of the most interesting features have nothing to do with the Borden murders, such as Mary Naugle's piece about Elizabeth Brownrigg, Kat Koorey's Jay Gould's Yacht or Denise Noe's great little work on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

The reason I ask is because, when the magazine is realeased the same people comment on it. Very little talk about what is written?

It really is a significant and erudite publication, and the fact that it still survives, especially with no advertisements. Most magazines are 20% substance and 80% ads. The Hatchet is 0% commerical ads and 99% subject matter.

Though I recieve a free subscription for writing for the Hatchet, I still purchase the printed copies. For the price of one printed copy one can receive all 4 yearly issues thru online subscription.

So, how many on the forum subscribe to the Hatchet or are planing to do so in the near future? Care to partake in the poll?

I have been a proud subscriber since the beginning. I wish that I had printed copies of all the issues of The Hatchet so that I could read them (and RE-read them) at my leisure, but I will remedy that in the future.
I'm with you, Michael. I don't understand the reticence to subscribe to or discuss The Hatchet. The price is certainly reasonable enough. And, some articles, such as Kat's wonderful article on Emma are truly significant contributions to the writings on the Borden case, and destined to become classics.

It could be partially that since the writers of the magazine and the posters here are in many cases, the same people, there's a real reluctance to criticize, and there's just so much praise to be given. I have enjoyed many, many articles, and I've often dropped a line here about them, but I've kept any criticism to myself, since I wouldn't be talking about a third party, as it were.

I love having printed issues I can read on the subway on the way home (I have the magazine delivered to my office, where it's less likely to be damaged). Plus, I love the questions I get from the lawyers with whom I work when I'm reading it at lunch.

I've subscribed since the beginning as well.

I'm a little shame-faced to admit I've only bought printed copies of issues containing articles I've written. (Lulu's charges for shipping and handling to Canada are over $7 -- so with the exchange rate, each copy costs me $30 plus in Canadian funds.)

But, as Michael points out, for the cost of one hard-copy issue I can get four issues on-line. And this is money very well-spent, as far as I'm concerned.

I save my on-line copies in Adobe format and print out and file any articles I think may come in handy for future research.

Wow Diana! I never thought of that........Yes, Just the expense of getting a copy of the Hatchet in your hands adds quite a bit of pocket change to the endeavor.

Postage is so expensive.

Collecting books as I do, many are purchased in the UK via the postal service. Half the time the expense of mailing the book to the States is more than the book itself. One of the last books I purchased in the UK was from the Alfred Miles 52 Stories Series. I was happy to have the book for 17 dollars, but it cost 24 to have it mailed to me.

The Hatchet falls into it's own little niche, not really a book but more than a magazine----more of a periodical or historical digest, or just what it claims, a journal.

Hey Stefani, perhaps you can have some little leather sleeves, the kind which hold a year's supply of publications........with the year and name of the magazine printed on the spine. This way we can keep them looking fine on the shelve.

When I first joined, I also bought the CDs of past issues. Lots of great reading.

I plan to sign up on friday, this week,when I get paid.

Quite honestly while I have an interest, with 3 kids, the house, the dog, etc. I don't have the extra money to justify it.

I know for some the amount will seem trivial, and I suppose I could dig deep and find the cash, but there are so many other things that seem to be waiting to take up my spare cash.

However, now that I know that copies are available at the library I will have to give them a read.

I plan to purchase the printed magazines in the near future but right now I have stock trading, math, bio's, Lizzie's, the forum documents and comments and a gazillion other books coming out of my ears. I'm looking forward to reading the Hatchet issues.
