Sorry to butt in again with Fairhaven history. . .
But, our native son Henry H. Rogers, who built our Town Hall, library, high school, etc., also was the guy who paid Helen Keller's way through college. Samuel Clemens introduced Keller to Rogers and asked Mrs. Rogers to pursuade her husband to help Keller.
Helen always acknowledged the assistance she received. She once wrote, “That I have not missed my small part of usefulness in the world, I owe to Mr. Clemens and Mr. Rogers.”
Helen Keller’s 1908 book, The World I Live In, is dedicated “To Henry H. Rogers, My Dear Friend of Many Years."
Helen visited Rogers' mansion in Fairhaven and was a guest on his yacht.
In 1929, Helen wrote, “One of the most delightful visits we ever had with [Rogers] was after my teacher’s marriage, when he invited the three of us to Fairhaven. . . . We took a glorious sail on his beautiful yacht, the Kanawha, and I loved the steady, swift motion and the flying spray. Most interestingly, Mr. Rogers described the coast and islands we passed.” That visit was in September, 1908.
To Rogers, she wrote,“ I cannot tell you how much we enjoyed our visit at Fairhaven—your home, the beautiful yacht, the dear grandchildren and the buildings with which you have enabled the town to live up to its name.”

This is very cool so many "new" old pictures have been turning up all over the place lately.
I hope it inspires people to sift thru their attics, etc so even more things can be found!

Thanks Harry for sharing that! Everytime I hear about Helen, it's Patty Dukes face I see in my mind! She did such an excellant job of playing Helen in "The Miracle Worker". I did a book report on a book about Helen, (can't remember the name of it) in the 6th grade, and on one of the pages it showed the alphabet using the hands. I learned all of them and taught my best friend and we could talk in class without catching the teachers attention! lol I still can do it and taught all my kids how to do it, as they were growing up. And to this day if we want to say something to each other without any one else knowing we use it!
