Reading the Preliminary Hearing I've come across two phrases I haven't heard before. On page 40 Dr. Dolan talks about taking notes on a "block" of paper. Is this a certain type of notebook?

On page 66 Dr. Dolan is questioned about what he found on a dress. He answered: I found on the dress skirt a "smooch", you might call it, I would not say whether it was blood, or was not.

From the context I want to assume a "smooch" is a spot or stain?

Yes- I like that word "smooch" too! From all I can gather it does mean a smear. Maybe the word kiss turned into "smooch" because it left a smear of red lipstick! My granny used to call a plain thick paper tablet (usually rather cheap paper quality) , a "block". Those little notepaper cubes today look rather like a smaller version of the paper block.
Mmmwhaaaa (as Dinah Shore used to do at the end of her show. which was brought to you by Chevrolet- "See the USA in your Chevrolet"-ah nostalgia, when bumpers had chrome in them).
