Here is a little courtroom humor from the trial testimony of Mary Raymond, dressmaker (p 1582):

Andrew Jennings is questioning her.

Q: Who is this Mr. Shaw?
A: Well, I don't know. It is some one that came where I was sewing. I understood him to say it was detective Shaw.
Q: Is he a dressmaker?
A: Not that I know of. I don't know what his occupation is any more than that.
Q: Was he there to have a dress made?
A: No, sir.
Q: Did you find out what he was there for?
A: Well, he seemed to come to ask me questions.
