Welcome back, Robin.
To answer your question: I'm sure Lizzie would be absolutely flabbergasted!!!
The first basic telephone was invented by Antonio Meucci in 1849. However, it was Alexander Graham Bell who won the first U.S. patent for the telephone in 1876. ( Source:

Here is a photo of Alexander Graham Bell on the telephone in 1892 (Click on image to enlarge):

Since Lizzie pasted away in 1927, she may have had a phone that looked similar to the one on the right (Click on image to enlarge):

Talking about Lizzie possibly being confused about all today's technology one must consider which Lizzie. Sixty year old Lizzie or 22 year old Lizzie.
Technology is well suited to the virgin mind.
The younger you are the more apt you are to accept it.
I think if she were confronted by today's technology and she had lived today, and being in her 60s, she would not handle it any differently than any other 60 year old. The same is true if Lizzie were alive today and 22 years old. From what little we know about the "real" Lizzie I think it is safe to assume she would be up or ahead of the times.
But then again, I see Lizzie as someone comfortable in her own skin. A creature of habit. Who needs technology anyway? Real face to face conversation is what it's all about, heh? Proof is her choice to remain in fall river. (small 'f' small 'r') But who knows.

Opps! Got to go. My Underwood typewriter keys are sticking. I knew I should have purchased a Smith Corona. Dam!

I never looked at it like that. It is a good point. I don't have a "virgin" mind and I'm fighting like hell with a cell phone!!
