One of the many Lizzie hats I wear is as the editor and publisher of The Hatchet: Journal of Lizzie Borden Studies. Today marks the publication date of issue number 3 of 2006. The journal is an online magazine primarily and you can subscribe for a mere $20 a year. If you subscribe now, you have access to the complete year’s issues (so far that is 1-3). There is one issue left in this year, and that will come out on November 4th.

If you are only interested in a print version of The Hatchet, mailed to your home, please visit our publishing partner LuLu.com for ordering information. All previous issues are available for sale—15 issues to date!

The Hatchet is an online quarterly journal devoted to the examination and investigation of the Borden Murders of 1892. Written for both the novice and seasoned Lizzie Borden enthusiast, The Hatchet takes a literate and entertaining approach through wide-ranging feature essays, reviews and criticism, interviews, fiction, art, poetry, and humor. Fact-filled, The Hatchet contains contributions by Lizzie Borden scholars worldwide. Submissions are open and all authors and artists will receive monetary compensation for their work.

We also accept submissions, and all writers and artists are paid for their work. We are interested in well-written but easy to read works related to the case, Fall River, the lives of the people involved in the case (even peripherally), and the Victorian era in America. We will consider previously published material but prefer original works.

We accept nonfiction essays, first-person narratives (growing up in Fall River, attendance reports at events, family memories that relate to the case, and other interesting pieces), advice for teachers using this case in their classrooms, speculative fiction, short stories, poetry, art, illustrations, humor pieces, literary criticism, and reviews.

Articles on history and/or culture can address a wide variety of possible topics. We’re interested in new angles on old ideas, or topics that don’t get covered frequently. We like to showcase articles that don’t just sum up some issue but make us think and make us want to read further.

The above is not exhaustive. If you have an idea for an article that doesn’t seem to fit into one of these categories, feel free to send us a query at [email protected]. If you don’t have an immediate idea for a piece, but you’d really like to write for us, let us know and be prepared to show us work you’ve done. We can always think of subjects!

Mondo Lizzie Borden, Episode 7: NOT Lizzie Borden

Being a collector of the weird and fabulous as it relates to the Borden case, I have files of these images saved during the past twenty years. And I would like to share them with you now. Laugh, gasp, chuckle, or rage, these photos were all on eBay. For a price. I used to write the sellers and let them know they didn’t have a Lizzie, but soon gave up on that practice. They didn’t care. Even though they were committing fraud by the sale of the image as a true Lizzie Borden. Oh well.

Here we go. Enjoy.
