Lizzie Borden’s Maplecroft Significant Price Drop

Every year, around the August 4th anniversary of the murders of Andrew and Abby Borden, the current owner of Maplecroft, Lizzie Borden’s home on the hill (which she purchased with her sister Emma Borden following her acquittal of the murders), places his home on the market. Each time he has asked an outrageous price, starting at almost $900,000 and then finally ending this last fall at $650,000.

In January that price dropped to a more reasonable, and serious, figure of $499,000. At this price, it just might sell!

A few things you should consider. The exterior of this 1889 home is in need of extensive repair and restoration. The once-lovely back porch is not at all at its best, having mismatched posts and metal handrails leading up from the walkway. It was postulated by a preservationist in the city, that the owner might have assumed that his property taxes would be less if the appraiser thought the condition was not up to snuff.

Just last week, also, the owner had replacement windows installed in the second floor, removing the original single pane windows. The old windows are leaning up against the garage.

Please note, the website for the property does not include any images from inside. Those are more difficult to find. I just happen to have a few, however, if anyone would like to see them.

Here is a link to the sale.

Mondo Lizzie Borden, Episode 7: NOT Lizzie Borden

Being a collector of the weird and fabulous as it relates to the Borden case, I have files of these images saved during the past twenty years. And I would like to share them with you now. Laugh, gasp, chuckle, or rage, these photos were all on eBay. For a price. I used to write the sellers and let them know they didn’t have a Lizzie, but soon gave up on that practice. They didn’t care. Even though they were committing fraud by the sale of the image as a true Lizzie Borden. Oh well.

Here we go. Enjoy.
