Variety does not like Lizzie Borden Had an Axe either.
Today, Variety posted their television review of Lizzie Borden Had an Axe, which airs on Lifetime this Saturday.
They labeled it “curiously lethargic” and “oddly constructed.”
All of this is not only conventionally done, but provides virtually no insight into its title character. That’s because the entire movie is essentially just an extended preamble to a sequence showing how the killings happened, or at least, might have happened. Until that point in the story, Lizzie Borden feels like a slog, while incorporating unorthodox touches that prove wholly arbitrary, such as a contemporary soundtrack.
Too bad. The way the plot is constructed sounds vaguely like the Elizabeth Montgomery movie from the 1970s, but that was a really good film and its star was brilliant in her stoic interpretation of Lizzie. Iconic really.
Someone I don’t think that Ricci will become the new Lizzie Borden icon.
