It is great to see more and more online journalists taking this all to heart and joining in the commitment.<\/p>\n<p>Our rules have always been simple:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>If a mistake is made, it is corrected in the right way with the mistake crossed out and the correction noted.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>We intend no harm and do not personally attack individuals.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>We do not make up facts.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>We do not assume or fill in the blanks of a story with supposition, unless noted.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>We do not rehash old posts and publish only new entries.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Our commitment to professional behavior, even when the cause is a controversial one, is paramount. Our reputation is at stake and we know it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spj.org\/ethicscode.asp\">Society of Professional Journalists<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A BLOGGERS&#8217; CODE OF ETHICS<br \/>\n<strong>Be Honest and Fair<\/strong><br \/>\nBloggers should be honest and fair in gathering, reporting and interpreting information.<br \/>\nBloggers should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Never plagiarize.<\/li>\n<li>Identify and link to sources whenever feasible. The public is entitled to as much information as possible on sources&#8217; reliability.<\/li>\n<li>Make certain that Weblog entries, quotations, headlines, photos and all other content do not misrepresent. They should not oversimplify or highlight incidents out of context.<\/li>\n<li>Never distort the content of photos without disclosing what has been changed. Image enhancement is only acceptable for for technical clarity. Label montages and photo illustrations.<\/li>\n<li>Never publish information they know is inaccurate &#8212; and if publishing questionable information, make it clear it&#8217;s in doubt.<\/li>\n<li>Distinguish between advocacy, commentary and factual information. Even advocacy writing and commentary should not misrepresent fact or context.<\/li>\n<li>Distinguish factual information and commentary from advertising and shun hybrids that blur the lines between the two.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Minimize Harm<\/strong><br \/>\nEthical bloggers treat sources and subjects as human beings deserving of respect.<br \/>\nBloggers should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Show compassion for those who may be affected adversely by Weblog content. Use special sensitivity when dealing with children and inexperienced sources or subjects.<\/li>\n<li>Be sensitive when seeking or using interviews or photographs of those affected by tragedy or grief.<\/li>\n<li>Recognize that gathering and reporting information may cause harm or discomfort. Pursuit of information is not a license for arrogance.<\/li>\n<li>Recognize that private people have a greater right to control information about themselves than do public officials and others who seek power, influence or attention. Only an overriding public need can justify intrusion into anyone&#8217;s privacy.<\/li>\n<li>Show good taste. Avoid pandering to lurid curiosity.<\/li>\n<li>Be cautious about identifying juvenile suspects, victims of sex crimes and criminal suspects before the formal filing of charges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Be Accountable<\/strong><br \/>\nBloggers should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Admit mistakes and correct them promptly.<\/li>\n<li>Explain each Weblog&#8217;s mission and invite dialogue with the public over its content and the bloggers&#8217; conduct.<\/li>\n<li>Disclose conflicts of interest, affiliations, activities and personal agendas.<\/li>\n<li>Deny favored treatment to advertisers and special interests and resist their pressure to influence content. When exceptions are made, disclose them fully to readers.<\/li>\n<li>Be wary of sources offering information for favors.
