Kat - thanks for sharing!

Couple questions.....is any of the river downtown still visible? Any of the falls (man made or not) visible?
Do you know which drug store the photo above is of?

Sorry, this file is from 20 to 12 years ago, and the store was only listed as image “11803.27o.jpg”. That’s why I am going through my discs, to finally see what’s been saved.
Also plz see my edit above yr inquiry.

There is one place that I know of where the falls are exposed, and Harry almost fell in!
It was an amazing sight but momentarily terrifying. Like the River wanted to gobble him up!

It was kind of lost to local knowledge and we were wandering around an area and all of a sudden we could hear it and feel it, and that led us to the site. There was a fence around it, but the gate was not secure: leaning on it almost took Harry under the city. I grabbed his belt from behind, but he was so light on his feet he kind of “danced” away from danger on tiptoe. So I can’t claim to have saved his life.
MB will probably remember where it is.

One of my 'side projects' is studying the social/civic clubs in Fall River. The Ancient Order of Foresters had a number of "courts" (aka clubs) in Fall River.
One of them was....."Court We'll Try". Until I read Mrs. Brigham's explanation, I had been thinking that was an odd and somewhat uninspiring name.

Yes, Stef was trying to explain it to me, until I found the quote in the Spinner book.📕
But now I wonder how good is a motto if a citizen has to explain it? otherwise…

The telegram was sent by Anna Morse to Wm. Bradford Morse (her father) in Excelsior but we never heard of that side of the Morse family visiting in Fall River or Swansea during the Borden’s difficult time…weird. Maybe we haven’t searched for them yet. We had at least 3 out-of-town Morses around!

Lizzie and the FBI- Harry requested the (1945) document under Freedom of Information Act.

Kat -- do we know any context of the 'FBI' letter? How did Harry know to request a copy?

Curious how long it took the FBI to respond to Harry?

Sorry for any misunderstanding about the timing of the FBI response.
Yes, here is what Harry wrote about it:

Lizzie Borden and the Federal
Bureau of Investigation

By Harry Widdows

Once again Lizzie Borden turns up in the most surprising places!
In January 2004 Susan Magliaro discovered that there was a document in the files of the F.B.I. on Lizzie Borden.
On January 12, 2004 I sent a letter to the F.B.I. citing the Freedom of Information Act requesting a copy of this document. On January 23 the F.B.I. mailed me a copy which is reproduced below.
As can be seen this April 4(?), 1945 letter is a very heavily censored document and mentions Lizzie Borden in reference to a verdict in another unrelated case. Lizzie is, “… knocked off her previously, prominently held place on the ‘Pedestal of Innocence’” by the verdict of another case. Apparently the author of the letter felt this defendant was guilty to even a greater degree than he thought Lizzie had been.
Then the author goes on to mention that Lizzie, while in the hospital had had a visitor, a man (name blacked out) who had an “intimate and personal conversation with her”, the last to do so. Lizzie had entered Truesdale hospital in 1926, a year before her death, for a gall bladder operation.
Although the letter has little to do with Lizzie it does generate a number of questions:

1. Who was the sender of the letter? The header of the letter shows that it was sent from Fall River.
2. Who was the man who had the “intimate and personal” conversation with Lizzie?
3. Of what interest was this man to the F.B.I.?
4. Since this letter was written in 1945, some 18 years after Lizzie’s death, why did the author relate this information on Lizzie to the Director of the F.B.I.?
5. Who was the defendant in the 1945 case cited by the writer?

A Lizzie Borden case enthusiast, named Aime Plourde, back in the sixties, wrote letters himself, hoping to gather more information on our LIzzie (I’ve done a redaction, myself.)

In reference to the FBI letter, I scrolled through the April 3, '45 edition of the Fall River paper and didn't see any articles involving trials or courts. Much of the entire 14 pages are filled with WWII stores and photos.

Mr. Plourde, himself.
The BBC letter reply mentions they are returning his news item…it may be this item. At the bottom it says “Sorry to have missed you” so I think he had several copies made that he handed out in his journalistic endeavors, giving him credentials. I guess he was writing a book.📕

Kat wrote: Sun Dec 24, 2023 4:04 am LBQ- poor Lil’ Abbie. Has anyone gone after Victoria Lincoln’s papers?
I noticed Lil’ Abby thanks Mr. Plourde in her letter (pg 3 in this thread- dated 1968) for giving her Victoria Lincoln’s address.
I also think he wrote letters to the LBQ? [edit here to turn blue]
Does anyone know if he wrote a book, or anything else about him?

We have the Pinkerton letter, the BBC letter, and he probably was in touch with V. Lincoln and we know he was in touch with Lil’ Abby.
Maybe we should find him, or his papers?

I had wondered in my earlier post (above this one) if Mr. Plourde had written letters to the LBQ.
My memory was pretty good for “Plourde” but the search at our online annotated LBQ at our website LABVM&L resulted in a different “Plourde.”

https://lizzieandrewborden.com/bibliogr ... author.htm

Plourde, Rosemary. “Letter to the Editor.” Lizzie Borden Quarterly II.1 (January 1994): 4.
Plourde offers her idea for consideration that perhaps Andrew had murdered his first wife, Sarah Borden, and that Lizzie and Emma may had discovered something incriminating during the daylight robbery, and had plotted to murder the father and step-mother as a way to not only avenge their mother’s murder, but to inherit the money that was due them.

Plourde, Rosemary. “Letter to the Editor.” Lizzie Borden Quarterly II.3 (Summer 1994): 2.
Letter in support of Arnold Brown’s lengthy response to Howard Brody and his “15 Questions” posed to Brown in his review of Brown’s book. Plourde appeals to the Quarterly to allow Brown the opportunity to respond in detail to the charges and questions leveled at him.

— BTW: Stef and I saw some of these letters Brown sent to the LBQ. Mr. Bertolet, Editor, said he stopped opening them. (He was a peaceful man.)
