Lizzie Borden of New England?

Post by Harry »

This is a marvelously written blog by Kate Woodbury in April 2005:

Well worth your time in reading. We learn a little about ourselves as well in these simple lines:

"What really happened? we ask. What really happened? But don't tell us."
I know I ask perfection of a quite imperfect world
And fool enough to think that's what I'll find

As a purist, skimming through it I automatically quibble at the author's having called de Mille's ballet The Fall River Legend (it properly bears no article), and her referring to The Pastor as The Accused's fiance; he is not portrayed as such.

However, I've printed this out to read over dinner tonight - looks fascinating. Thanks, Harry!

It's so true ... the mystery is the hook ... without it the case would have faded from our conscious mind long ago.

I went to Kate Woodbury's homepage and read more of her essays -- she writes on such disparate subjects as: Ayn Rand's 'Anthem', the latest Harry Potter book, TV's CSI, her parents' 50th wedding anniversary, C.S. Lewis, Jane Austen, Star Trek, mourning Phil Hartman, reality TV, and one of my favorite old films -- 'Dodsworth'. There is something there for everyone.

I've bookmarked her blog. Thanks, Harry!

KAT! You DIDN'T!

The links! The links! I'm so happy!

(Am I seeing you next Friday in Fall River?)

Okay, I have read the very amusing Flo King piece, but she is so Lincolnized! When she's not quoting her, she's paraphrasing her. And hasn't King shifted Lizzie's important visit to Smith's to before her trip out of town? And did Lizzie really have lunch with her parents (sic) that Wednesday? I thought she was in her room "all day, not feeling well," and/or out trying to get that prusssic acid.

I enjoyed this account very much, but, as with Sharon Pollock and her play Blood Relations, I would feel more comfortable with this piece of work if the author admitted openly at the outset how much she was leaning on Miss Victoria Lincoln for theory and support.

Opinions?
