Conspiracy theories

Post by ddnoe »

I'm writing an article about conspiracy theories. I've Fritz Adilz theory (Uncle John, Lizzie, Emma, Isaac Davis and an unnamed 5th party), Owen Haskell's in "Sherlock Holmes and the Fall River Mystery" (Dr. Seabury Bowen took the weapon and bloody dress away in his medical bag), Evan Hunter's Lizzie-Bridget theory, a Bridget and another assassin theory, Arnold Brown's "Mellen House Gang" conspiracy.
What other conspiracy theories are there? How do they work?
Thanks to anyone who helps me.

Radin's book has Bridget as the likely murderess although he never says it flat out.

Spiering has Emma dashing back from Fairhaven to commit the deeds.

Masterton's book exonerates Lizzie and points to a shadowy "Nemesis", possibly Andrew's ex-employee, Carpenter.

I should think it would be hard to exclude Lizzie out of any conspiracy.

Rebello's book has about 20 pages of possible suspects beginning on page 120. Not all the one's mentioned, however, have a book dedicated to their involvement.

You might get some ideas from my list of suspects, compiled at the web-site link:

First, I did buy Leo Rebello's book and am now reading it. I also, have Lincoln's book and Brown's but, I only skip read those two. Anyway, so far what stands out in my mind is the number of hits made on Abby. Whomever killer her hated her with a passion. The killer just unleashed a torrent of emotion on Abby. At least that's the way it seems to me. I can't imagine anyone other than Emma and Lizzie having that kind of feelings toward Abby. As far as Andrew goes either the killer didn't hate him as much or was just to pooped to hit him as many times.

For now, I lean toward Lizzie as being the killer. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if Emma, a classic passive/aggressive personality, wasn't in on it or at least had some knowledge about what happened even if it was after the fact.

I have often wondered if Andrew took less hits because a (marginally) more experienced killer knew the ramifications of too many blows. ie- Blood splatter, sore arms, overkill...

Maybe the killer also knew she simply didn't have the time for overkill.

I've always suspected that she was meant to be knocked out cold but was killed accidently. I think the only confrontation was meant to be with Andrew. The killer was then forced to kill Andrew instead of merely confronting him. Then the killer went back to Abby's body and really hacked her up to make it look like a maniac committed the crimes.

There has always been some issue about how close the killings occurred. Andrew's body was supposedly cooler but only to the touch. Core body temperation was never measured with a thermometer. Abby's blood was supposedly thicker leading them to suppose she was hacked early, but what happens if you axe someone who is already dead? The blood will spatter some, but it will not spurt. It will also be thicker if the body had been there for awhile.

I think Abby died first because she didn't leave the house fast enough. The killer believed she would leave quickly in response to a note. This killer could have taken the note with him. I think the overkill on Abby was meant to be a subterfuge.

I don't even believe that Andrew was meant to die. I believe there was supposed to be a confrontation, but Abby's accidental death sealed his fate.

I am just unclear in my mind whether there was one killer or if two were involved. I suspect an accomplice was responsible for Abby's death.

I guess you might say I have been unduly influenced by Arnold Brown and Ruby Cameron.

Early in my list of suspects there is David Anthony. That was a huge conspiracy and was something that made the papers, in 1985, but did not make it into any book.
Also, see Hatchet issue Vol. 1, Issue 5, Oct/Nov., 2004.

I have a very hard time believing Andrew was killed first.

#1. Abby went up stairs at about 9ish and was never seen again. She evidently never set foot on the lower floor. She never came down even when Andrew came home. So, if she were still alive, what she doing up there all that time?

#2. Abby's blood was thick and dark. Andrew's blood was still fresh and oozing.

I personally think that the killer intended to kill both Andrew and Abby. If you are only going to talk with someone, why bring a hatchet? If I were going to talk with a homeowner about buying his house why would I bring a gun? "Excuse me Mr. Owner but I just brought the gun in case we can't come to an agreement." It look's to me like whoever was packing the heat meant business.

Dead bodies don't bleed much. When a person dies their blood settles to the lower part of the body so I don't think 2 hour old thick blood would be running uphill and out of the wounds on Abby's head unless the wounds were low enough toward the front of the head. If the wounds were low enough than I think some of that blood could have drained out after the head was hacked on 2 hours after Abby was dead.

I can't see a killer hanging around in that house going back and forth between bodies unless the killer lived there or had a "look out." I can half-way see a killer killing abby then hidding in a closet for two hours then sneaking out and carving up Andrew before leaving. But, if that were true then that killer must have been planning on staying in that closet for at least 3-4 hours. Andrew just happened to come home early. Now what if that killer got a call from Mother Nature? What is he going to do? I mean we have to think of these kinds of things. (That isn't snickering I hear is it?)

What is strange to me is that Emma, who never went anywhere, left before the killings, John came over the day before and had an air tight alibi during the killings, and poor bridget was outside washing windows. Either these events were planned or Lizzie, or whoever, took advantage of this opportunity to commit the killings. Lizzie asked Bridget if she were going shopping, probably as a means of getting her out of the house, when Andrew came home early. It seems to me that everything points back to either Lizzie being the killer or she was a look-out for the killer. The lack of a hatchet and the absence of blood and sweat on Lizzie's hair and face indicate that Lizzie was just a look-out. But, Lizzie did burn a paint covered dress that she may have worn over her dress. A blood-covered scarf could have been burned in the woodstove after the murders.

The shallow wounds indicate to me that the killer must not have been very strong. I can't see a man hacking away on those heads so many times and doing very little damage, as far as depth of the wounds.

Now, what about that Harper's magazine Lizzie was reading? Could that have been the "rolled-up" paper that was seen in the stove? Could Lizzie have used it as a shield during the killing or as a means of hiding the hatchet until she was close enough to use it?

Perhaps John came over with a killer and Lizzie went along with it or Lizzie asked John to bring a thug in exchange for money. Perhaps Lizzie had a secret hidding place all set aside for the hatchet, i.e. a loose base board, etc. She could have retrieved it later, like she did the dress, and got rid of it by dropping it into a river.

Perhaps Dr. Bowen did it?
