Hi Steve,
You'll find, as a whole, we're not a bunch of Brown fans, but welcome.
And RayS should be rushing in to shake your hand any second now.

Hello Steve, welcome to the forum.
You'll find many opinions of Borden books on this forum including Browns. Have you read anything else besides Brown?
There is a ton of free information at the Lizzie Borden Virtual Library which members have built over the years.

Again, welcome.

If the Billie (Billy?) Borden book was ever written, it seems not to have been published. I couldn't find any reference to it on Amazon or in several other large used book databases.

Hi!
We were told there was no such book- that Brown made that up. Then we heard that it had existed but had been shredded because it could not get out of the California court system and Brown was dying and by then, soured on the whole thing.
Then once we believed it did not exist, someone we know and trust said they had a piece of it!
Maybe we will find out more this summer.

Thank you
Wow! Thank you all for the warm welcome! I stayed in The House back in '99 or '00 I think, it was really a highlight of a trip! I stayed in the parents room but slept in the "Closet" bed since I was slightly spooked by the idea of the big bed in their room. I did appreciate the in room bathroom too. The hosts at the time were VERY nice and fun to talk to. I have had an interest in the case for years and have read a lot of online info in addition to Brown. Brown's book is a fun read, but I understand there are many many different ideas and respect all perspectives. I am always anxious to learn and share thoughts and theories. Again, thank you for being so nice to a newcomer!

They have one called 'smiley project' which is how I can use different smileys and things like the welcome above.
It is all free! Harry recommended the browser here and I really cannot imagine ever using a different browser.

Welcome Steveads2004! I look forward to reading your ideas and theories. I also would like to know what other books you have read on the case. I cannot believe that RayS has not made one single post in this thread so far.

Yes, Welcome steve. Sure you will enjoy.
But until Ray gets here, I'll sit in for him.
Yes, I am a A. Brown fan. A very daring narrative and lively yarn. I enjoyed reading it. If anything, it opens the mind to possibilities that we would never ventrue to think of. So, well worth book to have on one's shelf.
But than again, if "Sudam" wrote a book about Lizzie Borden, I would run out and buy it, and probably give it a good review. Its all part of the mania!

I would recommend David Kent's "40 Whacks" as the one best book to introduce you to the case. Then read whatever you can get in historical order. Take notes on loose-leaf for reference on each book.
What is the point being proved?
How well does the author do it?
What is your opinion of the book?
In time you will sort of settle on an opinion, depending on your background and point of view.
I think Brown is right, but reserve the right to modify it if a newer book is ever published. Isn't that reasonable?
Nobody will claim that Masterton did a better job than Brown? Brown's theory is like the Copernican / Galileian theory of the earth revolving around the sun, rather than the older and intuitive Ptolemaic theory.
You are free to disagree, of course.

Those who disdain Arnold Brown's solution show that their mind is closed against the best solution to the mystery. No one has written anything better, have they.
The important part is saying a Secret Visitor did it, one whose identity was kept secret. Next is the identification of this Visitor.
Consider some other mysteries, fictional or not. If the people in the house didn't do it, then some one else did. (The Ramsey Case is the most obvious, then the murders of Nicole and Ron.) Both are officially unsolved.
Some of the True Crime cases written up by Ann Rule also apply this solution. It may be so obvious that you can't see this.

Who done it?
I see the sense in Brown's arguments... the connection to Brayton vis a vis the getaway plan...the reason for Bowen's quick exit...he just makes the pieces fit so well...i never did quite understand how Emma never let anything out of the bag for all those years...too bad someone didn't take her out for a few cocktails...i'm also very curious about Lizzie's oops I mean Lizbeth's relationship with Nance Gardner and what it was that drove Emma away from Maplecroft....did the bars stay on the windows after Billy died or was killed in '01?

I'd like to think of myself as a intermediate expert on this case. One who realizes that Brown has "solved" it (as far as it is possible to do so).
I know that others have more experience than I ever will, because I don't consider this as the priority in my life. Others have their own priority.
But I noticed that some people don't ever have much to say about the details of this case, just sort of complain about the others.
I did see the 1975 TV movie of this case. Don't remember much though. Others have mentioned that Uncle John was written out of the script. That is the need to cut costs and time to fit into the 2 hour slot (w/ commercials). That is why a whole film can never be made; there isn't a market for this. IMO
Now watch who criticizes me now!

As I remember it, Henry Hawthorne had previously publicized his memoirs back in the 1950s or 1960s (Brown's book). This was met with ridicule and disdain. Has anyone found anything in the newspapers of that time to document this?
Brown mentions his aid from the editor of the local newspaper. Maybe somebody local can look this up. The local library may help?
PS I may be going on vacation for the next couple of weeks. I hope you can bear my absence.
