While brewing beer goes back to the Egyptians over 3,000 years ago (and the Sumerians?), beer as we know it is fairly recent. The brewing with hops started in the 18th century. Early they would use other ingredients.
Beer is liquid bread that won't go moldy as bread usually does. Real bread w/o the chemicals. The Trappists and other monks, who were required to fast (don't eat) invented a liquid nourishment. Or so I read, I'm not that old.
I don't know of any "Saint Arnold", I would question that name.
Brown Ale? is one of the older brews, IMO. The 19th century saw the invention of lager beer, aged rather than fresh.
Any historians?

Saint Arnold? I think I know that one - the patron saint of millionaire pigs domiciled in and around Hooterville, isn't it?
