I thought your article was great, Denise, as they always are. I've certainly known about Oscar Wilde's sexuality, but to put it in th frame you have is enlightning to say the least. Lizzie may have been born in a wrong time. Just think what fun she might have in 2006 if she truly was a lesbian!

I enjoyed it as well, Denise.
The concept of a painting changing to reflect one's deeds is a fascinating subject.
Being an avid reader, Lizzie certainly would have at least heard of the story, if not read it. There is some degree of similarity with Lizzie after the murders of her parents. She was certainly not as cynical as the story's main characters but she did pursue her own enjoyment without much regard for Emma's or society's opinion.
Hmm... who's got the original of that photo of Lizzie on the porch in Newport? Hopefully her features are still the same.

Really nice work, Denise! Excellent article. I first read Dorian Gray many years ago and was very moved by it. You added some perspectives on the story that I had never considered. And tying it in with Lizzie Borden was very elegant.
It was amusing a few days ago when I had a talk with a gay couple about Lizzie Borden and had to break the news to them that there was no absolute proof, no smoking gun, that Lizzie was a Lezzie. but if she was guilty of being a crazed hatchet murderer, Oscar Wilde is a much better role model!
Anyway, I'm just trying to say I really appreciated your article and it makes me want to stop off at the library tomorrow and get a copy of Dorian Gray.

Just finished reading the Hatchet and your piece on Oscar Wilde. I read that book just a few years ago. There was a song about Dorian Gray and had to read the book to figure out what the song was talking about.
A lot of books I read and promptly forget, this one sticks with you.
I enjoyed reading your article very much. To think that homosexuality was illegal and considered a crime is just heartbreaking. Did not realize he went to jail for those offenses. I think it was a great tie in, as I believe Lizzie had lesbian feelings and was aware of the hardships that kind of lifestyle presents. I imagine she identified with the down trodden.
