Richard - If it's okay, I'll PM you with my Knowlton stuff. I hope you find it new and useable.
RayS - Pro writers should know what will sell, but not with every single thing they write. Who doesn't have a drawer full of non-published works? It doesn't mean the person is a bad writer. It's often the call of the editor, or a reader for the editor. They think they know what sells, they generally have a lot of experience at it, but they aren't always right either. "Cool Hand Luke" was rejected a slew of times before its publisher finally picked it up. Seems like "To Kill a Mockingbird" was much the same.
Just my opinion, but I think a pro writer needs to have a good idea of what will sell in the future - if you think of just what will sell at the moment, don't you think publishers are getting swamped with manuscripts like that? But I think their work also has to be in their hearts. And I think people can tell.
Are you someone famous or infamous, RayS?

"Bridget's Bad Day" was wonderful!
Thanks, T.K., for letting that part of your book be published in 'The Hatchet'. And thanks, Stef, for running it!
It seemed so historically accurate - it made me feel like I was standing right next to Bridget as she went about her things that morning.
Her thoughts matched so well with what at least I perceive her character to have been. She was a saucy lass! In one of the testimonies she gives, she is questioned about pears and she comes back with, "Well, I'm no great lover of them."
I loved it. I look forward to reading the entire book when it is published. Yup - when.

"ANY payment could compromise my anonymity. I won't even explain the origin of my nom de plume."

your anonymity is not exactly air-tight. your "nom de plume" is not exactly a masterpiece. your subscription would not hurt you -- i'm just recommending the benefits of it. your name and where you live, etc., is no mystery-- just get some new material to peruse. have i said that already? i guess so. i won't mention it again -- how's that for your privacy concerns?
let me add this: the likes of you are valuable here -- just get some more material, be it original source documents or other books. that's not an original suggestion either. but i'm not saying it again.
one more suggestion: show us what is wrong with brown. i'll tell you what it is in my opinion -- it does not explain lizzie. in order to solve this case, you have to explain lizzie, and brown skirts it. now just consider what i'm talking about.
