Town Clerk Kathy Corey

Corey does a bit of everything
For 24 years, troubled residents who do not know where to turn have called Town Clerk Kathleen M. Cory. From filing marriage certificates to redirecting a call about a raccoon in a basement, Ms. Cory seems to do, well, just about everything.
“I love the aspect of helping people,” she said from behind her desk at the town clerk’s office at the Town House, stacked with a variety of projects. Any resident who has attended a Town Board meeting knows Ms. Cory takes minutes for each gathering; people may not know that she is also registrar of vital statistics. In a nearby room, mounds of birth certificates from as early as 1747 and death and marriage certificates (including that of Marilyn Monroe to Arthur Miller, which was held in Katonah in 1956) line dozens of shelves twice as tall as Ms. Cory.
Recently, she said, “a man from Michigan traced himself to John Lewis,” the businessman who, in 1847, paid the then-called town of South Salem $10,000 in cash and railroad stock to change its name to Lewisboro. History seems to be a passion of Ms. Cory; a recent visitor witnessed Ms. Cory smiling as she imparted this knowledge as well as a firsthand glimpse of 18th Century birth certificates. The town is currently seeking a grant to scan and electronically store those certificates, which despite evidence of care, clearly show their age.
Ms. Cory is also in charge of all cemetery plots, dog licenses, permits for gatherings, and licenses for hunting, bingo and, strangely enough, video games. In the 1990s, there was fear that video game arcades would bring “hordes of rowdy kids” causing trouble; as a result, anyone using video games for profit in the town of Lewisboro is required to register with the town clerk. It appears that no such licenses have been necessary to date."
