That's a great site!

From Song Lyrics of 1947--BALLERINA by Vaughan Monroe
Dance, ballerina, dance
And do your pirouette in rhythm with your achin' heart
Dance, ballerina, dance
You mustn't once forget a dancer has to dance the part

Whirl, ballerina, whirl
And just ignore the chair that's empty in the second row
This is your moment, girl
Although he's not out there applauding as you steal the show

Once you said his love must wait its turn
You wanted fame instead
I guess that's your concern
We live and learn

And love is gone, ballerina, gone
So on with your career, you can't afford a backward glance
Dance on and on and on
A thousand people here have come to see the show
As 'round and 'round you go
So ballerina, dance
Dance, dance

Reached #1

Charted in 1948 by Buddy Clark #5, Bing Crosby #10 and Jimmy, Dorsey #10
Nat King Cole #18 in 1957
I wasn't born in 1947, but this 78 was part of my parents' record collection (and may still be in my attic). I just loved this song as a little girl. I wanted to be a ballerina so bad. I had a ballerina doll (and still have this doll, though her original costume disintergrated from so much use). She walked on pointed toes and had pink rubber ballet shoes with ribbons. I thought she was so great, and I would make her dance to this record over and over and over...

This is the closest I can find to my ballerina...except mine had 2 straight legs, but I loved her auburn hair.

Image

Seems like Vaughan Monroe was a very popular record singer in the late 40's. He did "Red Roses for a Blue Lady" long before anybody every heard of Wayne Newton. It was my mom's favorite record.

Guess Thanksgiving is making us all nostalgic tonight.

Thank you also for posting this. Btw, here's the Lizzie Borden theme song from Hall and Oates:

Rich Girl

You're a rich girl, and you've gone too far
'Cause you know it don't matter anyway
You can rely on the old man's money
You can rely on the old man's money
It's a bitch girl but it's gone too far
'Cause you know it don't matter anyway
Say money but it won't get you too far
Get you too far

Don't you know, don't you know
That it's wrong to take what is given you
So far gone, on your own
You can get along if you try to be strong
But you'll never be strong 'cause

You're a rich girl, and you've gone too far
'Cause you know it don't matter anyway
You can rely on the old man's money
You can rely on the old man's money
It's a bitch girl and it's gone too far
'Cause you know it don't matter anyway
Say money but it won't get you too far
Get you too far

High and dry, out of the rain
It's so easy to hurt others when you can't feel pain
And don't you know that a love can't grow
'Cause there's too much to give, 'cause you'd rather live
For the thrill of it all, oh

You're a rich girl, and you've gone too far
'Cause you know it don't matter anyway
You can rely on the old man's money
You can rely on the old man's money
It's a bitch girl and it's gone too far
'Cause you know it don't matter anyway
Say money but it won't get you too far
Say money but it won't get you too far
Say money but it won't get you too far
Get you too far

And you say
You can rely on the old man's money
You can rely on the old man's money
You're a rich girl, a rich girl
Oh, you're a rich, rich girl yeah
Say money but it won't get you too far
Oh, get ya too far

Lizzie Borden
The Chad Mitchell Trio (1961)

Elizabeth Borden took an axe
And gave her Mother forty wacks
And when the job was nicely done
She gave her Father forty-one

Yesterday in old Fall River
Mr Andrew Borden died
And he got his daughter Lizzie
On a charge of homicide
Some folks say she didn't do it
And others say of course she did
But they all agree Miss Lizzie B
Was a problem kind of kid

'Cause you can't chop your Papa up in Massachusetts
Not even if it's planned as a surprise (a surprise)
No, you can't chop your Papa up in Massachusetts
You know how neighbors love to criticize

She got him on a sofa
Where he'd gone to take a snooze
And I hope he went to heaven
'Cause he wasn't wearing shoes
Lizzie kinda rearranged him
With a hatchet so they say
Then she got her Mother
In that same old-fashion way

But you can't chop your Mama up in Massachusetts
Not even if you're tired of her cuisine (her cuisine)
No, you can't chop your Mama up in Massachusetts
You know it's almost sure to cause a scene

Well, the really kept her hoppin'
On that busy afternoon
With both down and up-stairs chopping
While she hummed a ragtime tune
They really made her hustle
And when all was said and done
She'd removed her Mother's bustle
When she wasn't wearing one

Oh, you can't chop your Mama up in Massachusetts
And then blame all the damage on the mice (on the mice)
No, you can't chop your Mama up in Massachusetts
That kind of thing just isn't very nice

Now, it wasn't done for pleasure
And it wasn't done for spite
And it wasn't done
Because the lady wasn't very bright
She'd always done the slightest thing
That Mom and Papa bid
They said, Lizzie, cut it out
So that's exactly what she did

But you can't chop your Papa up in Massachusetts
And then get dressed and go out for a walk (for a walk)
No, you can't chop your Papa up in Massachusetts
Massachusetts is a far cry from New York

No, you can't chop your Papa up in Massachusetts
Shut the door and lock and latch it
Here comes Lizzie with a brand new hatchet
Can't chop your Papa up in Massachusetts
Such a snob, I've never heard it said
She met her Pa and cut him dead
You can't chop your Papa up in Massachusetts
Jump like a fish, jump like a porpoise
All join hands and habeas corpus
Can't chop your Papa up in Massachusetts
Massachusetts is a far cry from New York

Thought you might like that one.

Yes...great lyrics. I hove them printed out on fancy paper, in a fancy font. They go nicely next to my copy of the 45 rpm.

GAWD! After Stefani's first lecture in FallRiver a year ago, she played part of that song. I was sleep deprived and it's all I heard in my head until I got home here and said hello to my kitties!
I'll have to wait a while before I ever even read the lyrics again!

I used to love that song as a kid, and I had forgotten all about it.

Thanks, 1bigsteve (:

For some reason now, my mind is wandering to the scene in Jersey Girl where they do a scene from Sweeney Todd for the grammar school.

When it came to helping Lizzie, perhaps it was the making of meat pies that Bridget couldn't "hack."

"hack", ooooooh, or "whack", oooooooh...

I've never read Sweeny Todd. I heard it was about a barber who kills his customers and then turns them into meat pies? Ooooooooh...

A fictional story I hope!

If I Had My Way by Frank Wildhorn and Jack Murphy

Long ago and far away
Before the world had come to this
I took for granted how my life would be
Assuming that my freedom would be free
Before these evening shadows fell
I reveled in the light of day
I rarely ever cried, my patience wasn't tried
And heroes never died

But if I had my way
Things would be different
Danger wouldn't come from a sky of blue
Choices would be clear
And Strangers would be kinder
Love a little blinder
As it saved the day
If I had my way

Every now and then it seems
We live our lives to such extremes
Racing all around, never homeward bound
Losing what we've found But if I had my way
Things would be different
No one would believe that a lie was true
Choices would be clear
And wisdom would be heeded
Warnings never needed
This is what Id pray
If I had my way

The milk of human kindness
Would seek us out and find us
and color all the words we say

And hearts would come alive
Instead of breaking
No one would believe
That a lie was true
Angels would appear
Children would be cherished
Hope would never parish
Faith would not betray
If I had my way

Here's my fav. and my anthem; I have performed this many a time:

This is the Moment by Frank Wildhorn

This is the moment!
This is the day,
When I send all my doubts and demons
On their way!

Every endeavor,
I have made - ever -
Is coming into play,
Is here and now - today!

This is the moment,
This is the time,
When the momentum and the moment
Are in rhyme!

Give me this moment -
This precious chance -
I'll gather up my past
And make some sense at last!

This is the moment,
When all I've done -
All the dreaming,
Scheming and screaming,
Become one!

This is the day -
See it sparkle and shine,
When all I've lived for
Becomes mine!

For all these years,
I've faced the world alone,
And now the time has come
To prove to them
I've made it on my own!

This is the moment -
My final test -
Destiny beckoned,
I never reckoned,
Second Best!

I won't look down,
I must not fall!
This is the moment,
The sweetest moment of them all!

This is the moment!
Damn all the odds!
This day, or never,
I'll sit forever
With the gods!

When I look back,
I will always recall,
Moment for moment,
This was the moment,
The greatest moment
Of them all!

Sweeney Todd--the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. His girlfriend, Mrs. Lovett, made meat pies of his victims, to hide his crimes.

Artist: Gerard McMann
Song: Cry Little Sister
Soundtrack: The Lost Boys (You remember, the 80's vampire movie with Kiefer Sutherland)
Background: This song would be perfect for a Lizzie video. A lot of organ pipe music in the background (the scary kind - like in the horror show when the villian is just coming in the room), and the singer has a very British accent so it sounds very dramatic.

A last fire will rise behind those eyes.
Black house will rock, blind boys dont lie.
Immortal fear, that voice so clear.
Through broken walls, that scream I hear.

Cry, little sister - thou shall not fall
Come to your brother - thou shall not die
Unchain me, sister - thou shall not fear
Love is with your brother- thou shall not kill

Blue Masquerade, strangers look on
When will they learn this loneliness
Temptation heat beats like a drum
Deep in your veins, I will not lie

Cry Little Sister- thou shall not fall
Come to your brother - thou shall not die
Unchain me, sister - thou shall not fear
Love is with your brother- thou shall not kill

My Shangri La
I cant forget
Why you were mine
I need you now

Put this CD in the other day and it just reminded me of Lizzie, oh well- thought I'd share!!!!!

Not a top 100 but one of my favorites. Naturally I had to tinker with the lyrics

What A Wonderful World

I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and for you
And I say to myself what a wonderful world

I see skies of blue, big clouds of white
The bright blessed day, and the dark sacred night
And I say to myself, what a wonderful world

The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of the people passing by
I see friends shaking hands saying "How do you do?"
What they're really saying is "I love you"

I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll ever know
And I say to myself, what a wonderful world
Yes, I say to myself, Oh what a wonderful world

Oh, yeah

Being about 40 at that time, I am 1000% sure the subject of this song is Patricia Hearst, convicted bank robber, and now a Regent of the University of California. (Or so I remember.)

The importance of any Regent or Board of Director of a University is to control the hiring and firing of teachers and the politics of education.

You can read Upton Sinclair's book "The Goose Step" or other "counter-culture" books on the censorship and control of the university system.

Who picks these lists? Are they straight and honest?

You see the claims for recent movies? Most popular, based on dollar sales. But there is no adjustment for the falling value of the dollar, or the percentages of people who see a movie.

The Who, "Behind Blue Eyes"
One of the Lizzie videos used this song at the end, do I recall?
I think it fits Lizzie really well!

No one knows what it's like

To be the bad man

To be the sad man

Behind blue eyes

No one knows what it's like

To be hated

To be fated

To telling only lies

But my dreams

They aren't as empty

As my conscience seems to be

I have hours, only lonely

My love is vengeance

That's never free

No one knows what it's like

To feel these feelings

Like I do

And I blame you

No one bites back as hard

On their anger

None of my pain and woe

Can show through

But my dreams

They aren't as empty

As my conscience seems to be

I have hours, only lonely

My love is vengeance

That's never free

When my fist clenches, crack it open

Before I use it and lose my cool

When I smile, tell me some bad news

Before I laugh and act like a fool

If I swallow anything evil

Put your finger down my throat

If I shiver, please give me a blanket

Keep me warm, let me wear your coat

No one knows what it's like

To be the bad man

To be the sad man

Behind blue eyes

Kat, that song reminds me of Skeeter Davis' song, "The Face of A Clown." It is a hauntingly beautiful song about a person hiding their hurt and pain behind the face of a clown.

I had some wonderful conversations with Skeeter Davis over thirty years ago. She was very kind. Too bad she is gone.

Yes Ray..........that's what everyone thought at the time, that the Hall and Oates song, "Rich Girl" was about Patty Hearst. But I'm afraid you are mistaken. The song was written about a friend of Daryl Hall or his girl friend. You can read about it right from the horses mouth below....

Maybe, maybe not!!! There is a financial reason to not say it was Patty Hearst (invasion of privacy, see Erle Stanley Gardner's "The Case of the Queenly Contestant").

There is also a philosophical question. If most people think it was about Patty H., doesn't it make that right? Don't most people, right or wrong, think Lizzie murdered her parents and was hanged for it?
Don't most posters think Lizzie was really guilty?

I don't just rest my case, I demand the case be dismissed and a not guilty verdict entered.

Kat, it took a half hour before I figured out what you ment by "signature." Then I felt like a dope for not knowing. "Hmmm... I don't remember signing anything..." Sometimes I think my brain is rotting away.

"S. H." is a woman, if that will help. If you get really, really stumped, PM me and I'll tell you. Her advice was the best advice I ever got.

Skeeter and her partner Betty Jack got their break in 1948 on radio and had their first big hit in 1953. Betty Jack was killed that year in a car wreck and it was Chet Atkins who talked Skeeter to make a come back. She had some twangy hits I never liked but some of her stuff floored me. In 1966 I was heading out the door when a commercial for her records came on TV. When I heard the first few notes of "The End of The World" I hit the brakes! I've been hooked ever since. I still have a poloroid she gave me of her in her backyard surrounded by her flock of dogs and wearing that stupid looking hat she loved with an ear-to-ear grin on her face. She was a sweet lady.

Ellen- The only thing I left in San Francisco was my carbon monoxide! I visited the city in '64 and loved it, traveling by cable car and bus. In the summer of '66 I nearly froze to death. In '86 I drove into that city and it was a nightmare. One way streets, steep hills, no parking or places to turn around. I had a devil of a time finding the TV studio and almost got in a major pile-up trying to get back onto the freeway afterward. To add insult to injury, my friend who was supposed to be on TV never got to the studio. It is no good for a clutch-drive. I swore I would never go back unless someone else drives. Bill Cosby did a funny routine about driving in San Francisco. I know exactly what he means.

It is a wonderful city if you don't have to drive. A lot of neat things to see and I have a lot of fond memories from '64.

Here is a song that has been recorded by a gazillion singers over the years. I fell in love with it when I first heard it on Englebert Humperdinkledorfer, whatever's record. He blew the fool out of it. It is a song that can be played at full throttle or very sedate and sound just as good either way. I heard a very nice version of it yesterday.

Love Letters

Love letters straight from your heart
Keep us so near while apart
I'm not alone in the night
When I can have all the love you write

I memorize every line
And I kiss the name that you sign
And darling then I read again right from the start
Love letters straight from your heart

Straight from your heart
_____

Here is another I fell in love with when I first heard it in '65 in "The Great Race." I nearly fell out of my chair years later when I found out that Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer wrote it. My whole attitude about them changed 180 degrees.

The Sweetheart Tree

They say there's a tree in the forest
A tree that will give you a sign
Come along with me to the sweetheart tree
Come and carve your name next to mine

They say if you kiss the right sweetheart
The one you've been waiting for
Big blossoms of white will burst into sight
And your love will be true ever more
