Value of Lizzie's Books from Maplecroft
I know approximately what people have paid, at auction, for a Lizzie Borden-owned-and-initialed book from Maplecroft (with the Maplecroft seal). But does anyone know the actual value of such a book (in very good condition)? I just won such a book from eBay. I won't say what it cost me, but it wasn't cheap. Of course, I've been waiting since last summer for an opportunity to win/purchase such an item, so I'm on "cloud nine" about now. (Remember when I told you, Shelley, that I was going to own one of Lizzie's books one day?)
Q. "You have been on pleasant terms with your stepmother since then?"
A. "Yes sir."
Q "Cordial?"
A. "It depends upon one's idea of cordiality, perhaps."

I have seen these books with seal and LAB go for between 225- 300 dollars each. Some books , like the one on animal vivisection on ebay had some lively bidding.
Congratulations Michael, on your acquisition- lucky duck! Now all you need is a fireplace mantel by which to curl up and read the book, preferably carved with At Hame in My Ain Countrie on it!

If you're interested in "fair market value" I'd start by punching the title into bookfinder.com in order to get some idea of what a "plain vanilla" edition of like or similar condition would sell for. (There are other ways and places to hunt, but I usually start there.)
I see there's another "association" book listed also, one that was apparently inscribed to Lizzie by the author.

I staid the night for shelter at a farm behind the mountains, with a mother and son - two "old-believers." They did all the talking...

Hello Michael:
Congrats on your Lizzie find. Great Item, and yes, pricey.
What are these books worth? Well I'm afraid that a book search will disclose little since titles, with the Lizzie Borden connection, are new to the market and very little to no history on the sale of such items exist. The value of these books (E.A.B) are very flowing. Future titles could sell for as little as 200 or as high as 800.
The great advantage to the book you purchased is its provenance. Along with the "B Maplecorft" book seal in the book, the seller had first hand connection with the Terry family where all these books came from.
Let us look a little at possible value. Last year several titles appeared for sale on ebay, all offered by the same seller. In my records I have information on 6 of these titles. The first couple to sell were done so for the first time with no past history to their worth. These few titles established what the books were worth, along with your title. When first listed on ebay the first 3 titles or so went for a couple hundred dollars. But, the last two, both with the "B Maplecorft" book seal in them sold for over 800 dollars. The average worth of all the books after the final sale was left at 477 dollars.
So you see, the market worth has been set. What you paid for the book is what it is worth. That can change in the future depending how many more of these titles are offered for sale, then again it may not. You may post the book for sale and recieve much more than you paid for it, or be lucky to make your money back. The book market is very fickle. But I can safely say that for now your book is worth 535 dollars. One way you can prove the value is to offer it to me for 535 dollars. I'm ready to buy. Once again, good for you Michael.....

mbhenty, thank you for your informative post, which I just finished reading. Looks like I got the book for a fair price, but, to me, of course, it is priceless. Sorry, but I can't take you up on your offer for it. I've waited too long for this. However, you have a potential consolation: There is another book on eBay, reportedly owned (but not initialed) by Lizzie that is up for an auction, which is due to end in two days. And, don't worry, I won't bid on it. I'm broke! : ) Thanks again for your post.

I will give you $535 for it. Make it $536 do I hear 537? going, going, gone.
What we are all waiting for is an original copy of Porter's Fall River Tragedy with the Maplecroft seal, signed and initialed by Lizzie, and dedicated to Lizzie by Porter.
The value of such a book would be hard to measure.
Of course I am joking, as it is very unlikely that Porter ever offered Lizzie a copy of his book and even if he had Lizzie would probably not have accepted it.

What is a Picture, but the capture of a moment in time.
