More Beach!!

Post by Kat »

I went to the beach again today. Got driven out after 2 hours by an electrical storm. It was Natures Way of telling me I'd had enough sun!
I was swimming and saw the lightning to the west. I pointed it out and began my trek out of the water to gather my stuff. No one wanted to hear about it! By the time I was packed and at my car parked at the Holiday Inn, they were making everyone leave the beach. How can people not know to get out of the water when they see lightning and hear thunder?

It was New Smyrna again, This time it was gorgeous! No waves, no rips- serene, calm, warm water- wonderful!
I love clouds and Florida sky especially. In fact, I think that is first on my list of what I love about Florida.

So there are some Florida sky pictures here from today. I was watching the front move in- and no one else was paying attention. I always say "Look up!"

I just heard on the local news and weather at 11 pm that there were the most lighning strikes today ever recorded in the state's history! Over 42,000 between 2pm and 8 pm today.

Rain and no rain
It will rain in the back yard and not rain in the front yard.

Great pics once again, Kat! I remember skies like that in Arizona where you could actually see where the rain was falling and where it wasn't, its very odd. Do you get alot of heat lightning in the summer in Florida? I remember when we used to visit there when I was little in August and there was a sun shower pretty much every day in the late morning or early afternoon.

We usually got pounding rain and lightning every day about 4:30 pm for 30 minutes during the summer. They say if you're not used to it, it's pretty scary. However, that's a pattern that has not been too usual the last decade.
My theory has been that when we get those heavy storms every day, we don't then get a Hurricane.
That has held true so far, lately, so hopfully the daily storms will be a sort of protection.

I've not been on here for 2 days- we've had terrible storms in my area - lightning that hits so close it sounds like just feet away- BOOM!- and yesterday hail! I had dime-sized hail and the wind came from every direction. Today there are branches down all over my neighborhood and shredded vegetation littering the sidewalks, driveways, streets and lawns.

Oh that sounds terrible! But if it's mini hurricanes to keep you from the big ones, then it's got to be better, almost like Mother Nature defusing her-self slowly as 0ppossed to letting it loose all at one time.

Well, I hope for your and Stefani's sake that that is true, it would really suck to get all those storms and then get a hurricane too on top of it! I really hate those kind of lightning storms where it hits too close for comfort.

I remember once in New Jersey when I was a teen that it was raining and I went out on the front porch to watch the rain. There was some lightning and thunder, but, it was rumbling in the distance. Out of nowhere, lightning hit the tree across the street with a huge BOOM. I don't remember doing it, but, somehow I had leapt through the open front door and landed on the living room floor, severly bruising my hip. There was a strong smell and taste of ozone in the air as well as burnt wood. Now that was a scary storm! Needless to say, I didn't go on the porch to view storms after that.

I agree exactly, shakiboo!

Oh Susan you sound like a near hit!
There is a story in our family lore that our greatgrandmother was watching a lightning storm, out her window, up north, and lightning hit the tree right out front and etched a negative of her face in the window glass!

I'm very used to these storms. The only inconvenience is when you have to stay home because it's too dangerous and unstable to go out or anywhere during such a thing.
You don't want to be caught out when hail is coming down.
Hail this late in the season, they are saying, is highly unusual.

We have been lucky so far this year, no really bad storms coming through. They have either gone south of us or north of us. Last week a pop up storm came through, lightning, wind and some hail, but it didn't last long, a tornadoe was spotted just 6 miles from here. But like I said we've been lucky so far.

Wow that's close! Keep safe!

Did you see the waterspout on the news from the other day?
This guy was with a lifeguard, his friend, and they shot this phone/camera/video for about 90 seconds. Then they e-mailed the file to the news/weather and we got to see it on TV right after it happened.
The local weather people are very pleased with their viewing audience sending photo attachments instantly to show on the news!
This is from Flagler County- near St. Augustine area- Atlantic Ocean- June 13th.
