News quote from Fall River Newspaper 1889.

"Andrew J. Borden 2nd, a well known dealer in provisions residing at 83 Globe Street, committed suicide by hanging........."

His 75 year old father found him hanging by the neck in the barn at the rear of the house.

Along with the Andrew J. Borden who hung himself in 1889 there was another Andrew J. Borden in 1892 who was a janitor at the city hall.

There were also 2 other Andrew Bordens, one being a laborer and another was treasurer of the Merchant mills.


Of the over 130 Bordens living in Fall River in 1892:
four of them were Philips
four of them were George
four of them were Richard
five of them were William
five of them were Sarah
Eight of them were Charles (of those 3 were Charles H. Borden)


The most popular Surname in Fall River in 1892 was Sullivan. Though records show only one Bridget on record (not our Bridget) there must of been many others working in restaurants and households and not recorded.

In 1892 there was almost 700 Sulivans in Fall River. The confusion must of been tremendous. Of those:

33 of them were Michael
37 of them were Patrick
62 of them were Daniel
100 of them were John...........

So you see, the confusion with the 4 Andrew Bordens could be worse.

Today Fall River at 90,000+ people is not that much bigger than it was in 1892 when it had almost 75,000 population.

Strangely enough even though it has 15,000 more people, its telephone directory shows only a dozen or so Bordens and 35 Sullivans.

Makes one wonder where all the Bordens and Sullivans have gone to?
