Legal action against Edwin Porter?

Post by darthvader »

Did Lizzie take legal action after The Fall River Tragedy came out? It seems like I read she did. The urban legend is that she bought all the copies and burned them but I think we are know that to be an untruth.

But if she did take legal action, cease and desist or otherwise, I had a thought. She must not have been the murderer if that was the case. Otherwise she might risk having to go back to court again and showing in the papers yet again. If she got away with murder, to return guiltless to her friends, why would she want to stir things up again?

Publish a book about me saying I murdered somebody, and I will sue your tail off in court, unless of course I really did murder somebody.

I believe Lizzie and Emma did manage to serve the publisher with a notice to suppress certain photos and to restrain them from publishing until after the trial.
That was not a problem, from what I understand- these restrictions did not make much difference to Porter and the publisher.

It's an interesting point tho, that Lizzie might fear being forced to go to court again, if she was guilty of the murders. But then again, she would fear going to court again for any reason. I think anyone might after just getting out of jail!

I believe there were other legal issues thru the years that were settled out of court.

Why would Lizzie fear of going to court again? She was aquitted of the crime and you can't be tried again for the same crime unless there was
no such thing as double jeopardy back then

Jeff, she wasn't worried about the murder charge. It was the charge of being an accessory. She knew the murderer and covered for this person.

Oh yes of course. I forgot about other charges that could've been brought against her assuming she was an accessory and not the actual
killer

I suppose you mean that if she had to testify as a plaintiff in a legal matter concerning Porter's book deal, that might open a door for the defense to ask an incriminating question?
