New spell check feature.

I'm assuming that the new spell check feature is due to the upgrade of the database, that occurred on the 22th. I love it!!! It is so easy to use!!! Thank you Stefani.

Try typing a word wrong. It will underline the word in red. It will also do it for words that are not in its dictionary even though spelled correctly.

When I place the cursor over the underlined word and right click the mouse I get a list of possible correct spellings. However, I am not sure that this feature comes from my browser (Firefox) or from the Forum. I have included in my browser an optional add-in to spell check. I believe it may be the Forum.

Hmmm...nope, nothing over here Harry. It sounds like you may have a Firefox-specific add-on or something. I'm using IE...no such beast in there other than the ordinary optional features...bold, italic, etc.

Yup, just checked the specs at the Firefox web site and the spell check is built right into version 2.0 . You can even add new words to the dictionary. I can now remove the add-in I had for version 1.5.

Well, now you know why I like Firefox.

Well, I'll be darned. I did a bit of research and found out that it is my browser that is giving me the spell check feature!!!

I use Netscape Navigator as my primary browser and the spell check feature appears just as Harry stated. Since, Steve and Doug are not seeing this feature, I decided to do a bit of research. I did a test using the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser and got zip, giddly-squat, nothing! Dang!!!

The spell check feature began, for me, after the Forum server was upgraded to the more advanced database on the 22nd; that is why I thought it was a new feature from the Forum upgrade. I am now thinking it is a combination of the Forum upgrade and the Netscape browser.

Harry, did the miss spelled words, with the red underline, appear for you before the 22nd of this month?

Steve and Doug, I truly apologize, for getting your hopes up.

I thought it was odd that no one had mentioned this new feature - now I know why.

Netscape and Firefox have the same lineage - Mozilla. I have Netscape v9.0b2 which has the spell check and if you go to the top and click Help and then click About Netscape Navigator you will see that Netscape has the same roots as Firefox.

Firefox put out v2.0 in November 2006 and it included the spell check feature. I'm not sure about when Netscape had this feature.

I can't remember when I first noticed when the underlining began but it must have been when I first began using v2.0. The underlining could be a little bit darker.

Judy, maybe you are such a good speller you missed the rare underlining in red.

My messages light up like a Christmas tree.

I didn't realize that Netscape and Firefox has the same lineage; so, that is why you and I get the red spell check underling - interesting.

Actually, Harry, I am the world's worst speller! Just ask my husband; I'm sure he would be glad to tell you some storrrries!

I've had Netscape as my default browser for about a year or so, however, I very seldom type the body of my messages in the forum's postreply box. I have gotten into the habit of typing up my messages in my Outlook Express, check it for spelling errors, then cut and paste it into the forum's postreply box; I can then do a review and submit. I have found that by typing up my messages in Outlook Express, especially on long messages, I can copy and paste the codes that the forum uses for bold, italic, and underling into my massages while still in Outlook Express - this saves a tremendous amount of time, for as you know, each time you use these features via the forum's postreply box the program jumps you back to the beginning of your message.

I discovered the red underlining a few days ago when I typed up a short message using the forum's postreply box, and since there was an upgrade on the forum's database around the same time, I assumed the underlining was due to the upgrade. Now, I am really embarrassed for starting this thread!

You should absolutely not feel that way, Judy. Spell check is\was a needed enhancement to the forum.

This website tracks browser usage and shows Firefox gaining as the browser of choice.

You're right Harry, I shouldn't feel embarrassment for starting this thread, as it was an honest mistake - after all I am a human being and all human beings make mistakes. So, instead of feeling embarrassed, I have decided that I am just going to say, "oops, I'm sorry".

Thanks for posting the link to the website showing the Firefox browser as the browser of choice. I still have the PM that you sent me containing information on Firefox, and my husband is willing to give it a try - we just need to get it installed. From the sound of things, I think Firefox will most likely become our default browser.

I recently copied all of my important files, emails, photos and such onto DVD and then did a full system recovery, bringing my computer back to the state it was in when I pulled it out of the box. I then turned off Windows automatic updates and HP's automatic updates before I connected to the net. In the past I didn't know enough to do that and they would download stuff without telling me what it was. In fact HP downloaded a "language" for my Outlook Express email program and after my full recovery, erasing everything I had put on the computer, that "language" is still there. I can't get rid of it. I also noticed that the little gray-haired man who walked me through the set-up process when I first started the computer is no longer there. It is now a round gray circle with a "?" in the middle that moves around like a flag flapping in the breeze. It is iritating when changes take place and you are not told why.

I did not download any security updates from Windows this time due to the fact that some of them cause my computer to slow down and crash on a regular basis. That is why I have had to do a full system recovery, to get rid of those updates. Many times in the past I would have my computer working like a charm and then the minute I finish downloading and installing the Windows security updates my computer slows down and will crash again and again and again, over and over. IE 7 has it's problems. It is hard to erase something you typed into a box, like Googles main page, and IE7 likes to bring up a box that tells me IE is unable to open that web page and needs to abort. I click "OK" and hit "refresh" real quick. That forces IE7 to open the page. Tabed browsing is nice unless you want to look at two pages side by side. then it's a pain.

One of my peeves is that stupid "OK" button. My computer will crash or some other major problem happens and a box pops up that says something like, "The .dllXilfptwedGH.rewflowerchild.xz cannot be found. Post script out of range. OK?" I feel like screaming, "No it's not OK. Tell me in plain english what the problem is and let's work together and fix it. Don't give me this OK crap, Bill." They ought to have a button that say's, "Fix the damn problem." A nuclear bomb just went off in your computer and Windows wants to know if it's "OK." Maybe I ought to get ahold of Joan Rivers and tell her about this problem. If she ranted on stage about it Microopoly may get their finger out of their ear long enough to get the problem fixed. Come to think about it that's not such a bad idea.

Well, how is this for a real kicker!!! My computer was down all day, yesterday - I could not connect with the internet. When it was finally up and running, I found that a Netscape update had been done and guess what? I no longer have the spell check with the red underlining, when I type a word incorrectly in the postreply box!!!

What a bummer!!!

I think it's time to switch to Firefox.

Was the update done "automatically," Judy? I have had nothing but trouble with "automatic" updates. They are the reason why I had to do a full system recovery, bringing everything back to the moment I pulled it out of the box, not once but several times. Now I keep ALL automatic updates turned OFF. I'm very picky about what I download. My computer has been running like a dream ever since.

Maybe you can reload Netscape?

Judy, what version of Netscape are you using? If it's 9 make sure the box "check my spelling as I type" is checked. Version 8 may work the same way.

Click Options
Click Advanced

The word "Upgrade" means expect problems.

Upgrade can also mean: "Well, we decided the version we had (which worked like a charm) wasn't good enough, so..."

Automatic updates are the beast from hell for sure. I keep mine on, but set to "Don't do nothin' 'less I say it's kosher first!"

Aha, Netscape 9.0b2 is doing an automatic "update" download now on my machine. It's called 9.0b3. Let's see what happens.

We have to keep in mind that Netscape is owned by AOL (since about 2000) and AOL has never been in love with Netscape. They abandoned it for a long time but are now trying to bring it up to snuff with IE and Firefox.

Yes, it was an automatic update. I remember when you had to do the full system recoveries. I know it was not a fun time for you. I need to figure out how to turn the updates off or at least get some control over them.

I was (notice I used the word - was) using version 9 of Netscape - I checked to see if the box for "check my spelling as I type" was checked, and did not find an option for this feature!

Steve, Doug, and Harry: Version 9 was installed on my computer a year ago. From version 9, I had created a short cut to the Lizzie Borden Society forum. Which is the one I was using. Upon further investigation, I found that this new "update" had taken this short cut back to Netscape version 8.1!!! So, I now have both versions on my computer!!! Version 9 has the spell check; version 8.1 does not. Now, it should be a simple matter of deleting the 8.1 version, right??? Well, silly me - it is a bit more complicated than that. As we all know, the updates can't make it a "simple matter" to fix.

This is what I have found, so far:

I have not been able to create a short to the Lizzie Borden Society forum, from version 9. When I go into version 9, my default page appears and I have to go into bookmarks to get into the Lizzie Borden Society forum. Not cool!!! :ncool:

I received several Topic Reply Notifications via my e-mail yesterday, so I opened version 9 - logged in - viewed the posts from my last visit, then when to Outlook Express to view the Topic Reply Notifications. When I clicked on the first link I was taken to the version 8.1, which I was not logged in on!!!

GRRRRRRR!!!!

I won't be able to do anything with it today as I have to work - but I am posting this message from the version 9. I would appreciate if one or better yet, all of you could post something on this thread so that I can see if the e-mail Topic Reply Notification link takes me to version 9 or 8.1.

Judy, I'm no expert with computers but have you tried removing the Netscape browser using the "Add/Remove" tool in Control Panel? I thought you may be able to remove the version you don't like, or both, and then download the newest version. I have Netscape on my computer but it is not yet activated. I heard that when people sign-up for AOL and then try to remove it's software later they can't. It's there to stay. If AOL bought Netscape maybe AOL has downloaded software that is there in your computer forever.

Like I said I'm no expert, I'm just throwing out ideas.

I was thinking, I would try doing this very thing, Steve. My hesitation is in the fact that when I go to view the Topic Reply Notification link it takes me to the 8.1 version, even when I am logged in on version 9 - I would rather have the version 9 due to it having the spell check feature. However, I may have to delete both version and install the one I want. My question is, what will this do in regards to viewing the Topic Reply Notification link? Will it take me into the version 9 or to la-la land?

Unfortunately I haven't had the time to do anything with it, yet. Hopefully this weekend I'll have some spare time.

Before you remove anything try downloading v9 again. Let it override the existing copy. Something must have gone wrong during the update. Surprise, surprise with updates!

My old computer has 3 different Netscapes on it, v4.8, v7.1 and v8.1. Each has a separate icon and the programs are in separate folders.

Netscape 8.1 appears to have been copied off Firefox 1.5 which did not have a spell check. Netscape 9 appears to be copied off Firefox 2.0 which does.

I thought about overwriting the browser but I wasn't sure that would work. Usually when I try to overwrite a program I'm asked to delete the original before installing the same program again. That's with most of my add-on programs. I've never tried it with a browser.

Judy - Have you tried taking a hatchet to it?

I haven't thought of taking a hacthet to it, but a hammer has sure crossed my mind.

I thought I would temporarily change my default browser to Microsoft Internet Explorer before downloading the Netscape version 9 again, then switch the default browser back to Netscape to see what the results are.
