Andrew Jennings re. Manchester Murder

Post by Tina-Kate »

I was looking for something this week & (surprise, suprise) could not find it for the life of me.

Does anyone remember the source for Andrew Jennings's quote to the press following the discovery of Bertha Manchester's body? i.e. "Are they going to say Lizzie Borden did this too?" (paraphrase)

Sourcebook? Rebello? Anyone???

Thanks!

It appeared in the Boston Globe on 6-1-1893. Will need to check which books.

The Boston Globe lists it this way:

"Well, are they going to say that Lizzie Borden did this also?"

Arnold Brown's book reports him saying it this way:

"Are there any among you who will claim Lizzie Borden did this, too?"

And Spiering reports it this way, p108:

"When he heard the news, Jennings was in Boston with ex-Governor Robinson going over the last-minute plans for Lizzie's defense. Excitedly he hurried to Fall River, where he was met at the train station by representatives of the press. Smiling happily, he stood jauntily on the station platform. "Well," quipped Jennings to the newsmen, "are they going to claim that Lizzie Borden did this too?"

Thanks, Harry! I will check Sourcebook again. I know I've seen it more than one place.

I've just checked Did She Or Didn' She. I can't find it in there. Also the Sourcebook. I couldn't find it there either.

Could it be in The Trial as a statement by Jennings?
