John V, Morse's Cow

Post by joe »

Here is an article that appeared in the Oxford (IA) Mirror on August 1, 1889:

---Iowa comes to the front again, this time with the largest steer known to be living. John Morse of Hastings, Iowa, has a four-year-old animal that weighs 3,400 pounds. It has gained 1,100 pounds during the past year.

Wow Joe! A new find on John Morse! Good for you!

The time frame rang a bell, and it seems that by the following April, 1890, Morse was living in the east.

Sounds like a lot of bull to me, Joe.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

That's a great find. I think uncle John was quite a successful farmer. We under-rate him.

Anybody up for a good steak? John Morse is buying, hehe.
I staid the night for shelter at a farm behind the mountains, with a mother and son - two "old-believers." They did all the talking...

I just have to add that the title "John V. Morse's Cow" sounds almost like a children's book that my seven year old daughter would enjoy.
I've met Kat and Harry and Stef, oh my!

Wow, he must have been quite a farmer. Does anyone know what actually happened to John Morse after he went back out west. Did he ever keep contact with Lizzie or Emma?
