How long would it have taken for Emma to have received that telegram if it had been sent right after the murders? If it took a short time the household would have been able to see that Emma was at home when it arrived, thus tossing out the theory that she did it.
Also, is there any information written about how thoroughly the Brownell household was questioned regarding Emma's whereabouts at the time of the murder?

I think she took the 3:40 train from New Bedford, which headed north toward Taunton then southwest to Fall River.
Shelley has probably been able to do a better timing of the trip from Fairhaven center to Fall River than I've ever done, but by car on today's roads, including Rte. I-195, it's at least 20 minutes or more.
Given the roads and transportation then, it would be pretty difficult, but not completely impossible, to get from the Brownell house to Second Street and back during the required time. The tightest time would be between the time of Andrew's murder and the time the telegram got to Fairhaven.
Dr. Bowen sent the telegram just after 11:30. The transmission to New Bedford or Fairhaven would have been quick and a bicycle messenger probably would have had the telegram to the Brownell house by noon.
I really don't know if it's clear that Emma was actually at the Brownell house when the telegram arrived.
It was reported that police checked the Fairhaven angle, but I've never seen any witness statements and nobody from Fairhaven tesified at any time.
A New Bedford Standard reporter interviewed Rebecca Brownell in Fairhaven and I'm pretty sure I've posted that story here in the past.
