My Lizzie Borden Poem
I wrote and posted this a long tme ago. Thought I would update it here:
Dr. Bowen looked aghast
at Andrew's face carved up by axe
When he could stand the sight no more
he made his exit out the door
I'll send a telegram, he declared
and ran outside to get some air
He left the form covered by a sheet
a father no longer bothered by the heat
Meanwhile Lizzie began to hint
that Abbie was home, so off they went
Bridget and Addie, that stalwart crew
another body to find anew
directly up the steep front stair
from the 7th step they saw her there
lying like a mat upon the floor
Abbie was dead, she would breath no more
Lizzie now an orphan be
a suspect jailed, she would not go free
for 10 long months she languished there
a trial ensued, and thousands stared
no evidence connected her to the crime
she was acquitted in an hours time
Her sister Emma believed her tale
and claimed her innocence without fail
even though she wasn't home
that day to hear her father's groan
They bought a house up on the Hill
news reporters stalked her still
each move she made, for a time
reminded reader's of her "crime"
for she was guilty to the town
Fall River neighbors let her down
Lizzie changed her name one year
and Emma left her without a tear
They lived apart 'til Lizzie died
and Emma could no longer hide
within a week they both were gone
The Borden Story was all done.
Did Lizzie Borden wield the hatchet
covered by her father's jacket?
And did she butcher Abbie too?
What an unladylike thing to do!
The world wonders unto this day
Who was the murderer who got away?

OK, Kat, you have inspired me. I call this "Thursday on Second":
After hooking my last button,
I came downstairs and smelled the mutton.
Zounds! It took my appetite;
Still, I craved a little bite:
First a cookie, then another.
Zbud! The sound of my stepmother:
Dusting here and everywheres.
Now, she's groaning up the stairs.
Think I'll take the laundry to her,
Then run my brand-new hatchet through her!
Whew! That's done, and what a mess--
I've made of my best morning dress.
Time to wash up; time to change,
Then I'll toss it in the range.
I've practiced up; know what to do:
I'll fetch my Bedford cord of blue,
And put on something overall,
Another clean-up to forestall.
Here comes the maid: "Oh, don't you know?
There's a cloth sale-- off you go!"
"No? You're tired and up to bed?"
Time to work on Father's head.
I'll say I went out for some lead;
Came back inside and found him dead.
Oh, what a morning! Now, it's ending:
Time to do some major spending.
After hooking my last button,
I came downstairs and smelled the mutton.

Miss Lizzie Borden, who was innocent, or so she claimed.
I really enjoyed both of the poems - they were great!
