The Universe

Post by Kat »

Has anyone seen the new History Channel's show on "The Universe?"

We learn about what comes after String Theory! Gee! String was only around long enough for me to get a grasp on it, now it's incomplete. There is a compliment to it called Membrane theory.

Progression: Theory of Relativity, then Quantum Mechanics to complete that- then Striing Theory and now Membrane theory to complete that!

The reason I bring this up is what it may mean to ghost hunters. It offers an explanation of parallel universes. Up to 4, I think. And other dimensions are involved. Of course, they didn't mention this aspect (the paranormal), but they did show graphics of a dinosaur walking thru your living room while you are watching TV, and so all time and all universes may happen simultaneously. I think that could explain some orbs and those flashes that are seen that seem to have light and depth and mass, yet turn and disappear from view. That may be some crease or crack between dimensions or Universes. (My thoughts...)

I was waiting for them to use this to explain sightings of *alien animals* like Loch Ness monster, BigFoot, UFOs, etc. as glimpses into other dimensions.

Everything that lived still lives, just in another place, or another form, they speculate- and that there may be duplicates of each one of us- multiple duplicates, and one can be dead here yet alive in another place.

The show is well worth watching and if any *ghosties* get anything out of it, it would be cool to read your interpretations.

This sounds extremly interesting. I've heard of the other dimensions happening at the same time as this one. Wouldn't it be interesting to cross over into another dimension and see what is going on. Or to see yourself in a different time. I saw a Star Trek episode along these lines and that's when I first even thought about such a possiblity.

I saw another part of the new show "The Universe" over the weekend. It was on the Speed of Light (and that atomic particle collision machine that's being tested to re-create the "Big Bang Theory.")

Anyway, this installment showed the way things would look to us as we approached the speed of light. A man on a bicycle broadside to our view would be only half seen- the first half, but the second half would be invisible.
Then they showed what it would look like to the person riding the bike to meet the speed of light:
It looked like that glowing tunnel of colors that near-death experience survivors report! Of course, they did not mention that interesting evaluation in the program. But that's what it looked like to me. (I have read a few books on the subject of 'near-death experience.')

Imagine: The soul leaving the body upon death, at the speed of light, or faster, and going who-knows-where? From the theories proposed on the first program on multiple dimensions, maybe that's where the soul goes?
(These are my speculations- not those of the show "The Universe.")

I don't know why they are not applying these theories on TV to the real questions we all have, about the nature of the paranormal and where the soul might go...

I can't speak with any authority, but maybe when we die, our awareness goes to, or becomes, whatever it was before we were born. If we are reborn as someone or something else, we will not have the same awareness, the same identity. It's not like we'll take a look around and say, "Oh good! I'm back!". We won't be aware of a previous awareness.

I saw part of the same show, "The Universe", and I enjoyed it. The problem I have with ascribing a shape to the universe is that it must be in relation to something else in order to be defined. Having a shape necessarily makes it finite, there have to be limits to give it a shape. Kind of like the Big Bang Theory, "One day (?) there was a BIG BANG". Where? Was there a cardboard box laying around where this took place? If there was a place for this to happen, then there was already a viable universe!

The problem is, the human brain isn't wired to deal with the concept of infinity. By definition, we can't define it!

That's true- and I've struggled with the Big Bang Theory also. There must have been something to make something.

They are theorizing further, on these shows, a picture of the Universe as slightly curved. Before, without telling me, they thought it was FLAT! Isn't that weird?
But, in years past, they also were thinking it was finite and getting smaller. Now they say that is wrong and it is expanding after all. (Sort of like *Last year eggs were bad for you- this year they are good for you...*)

I'm grateful to be discussing this, because I only know 1 other person who watched these shows. We spoke for 45 minutes at Thanksgiving.
Last year, he and I discussed the String Theory after dinner, as that was the news.

Yes, and wrapping the mind around infinite and then accepting infinite infinities with mutliple universes is boggling!

I know what you mean about the "First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is" nature of the various theories, if they disproved the first one, we have to take subsequent theories with a grain of salt! I think they used triangulation to determine the curvature. However, I know that there is a small difference between arc length and chord length for a given segment of a circle, and the smaller the central angle subtended, the less measurable difference there is. Depending on what they were using to measure and what they were measuring, the central angle, if small enough, might make any difference inconsequential with respect to instrument or human error. It would all depend on whether or not the measurement could be replicated, and the identical difference replicated.

Another thought, the same people who brought us the concept that matter can not be created or destroyed, only altered in form, have something coming from nothing with the Big Bang Theory.

I really think that trying to define the universe in terms we currently understand is a bit like trying to measure atoms with a yardstick! Still, we have to try!

Earlier this month, I heard that Einstein's Theory of Relativity has been proven correct. He also theorized that the universe is expanding.

Kat, I know you're immersed in paranormal lit-- recall that Sylvia Browne says The Other Side is three feet above us, vibrating in another dimension. She also states that each of us has a perfect soul mate, whom we are 99.999 ... percent unlikely to meet in our lifetimes, as we seldom incarnate simultaneously.
She also says that we appear, in death, as we did at about age 30. If we die before age 30, we will "grow up" to look that age-- this includes miscarried babies.
I hope this is true-- I have two uncles and one aunt who didn't live past Day One, and I'd like to think I shall see them!
Anyway: RE Sylvia. Who knows? Her "The Other Side and Back" is a fascinating read, which "jibed" with many of my "spiritual visitations" in dreams. Many of her later books, however, do not resonate as well.

I saw 'The Universe' episode on parallel lives. It was shocking. It was scary to hear all that, coming from experts.

I thought of ghost sightings. That does sound like that's where they are coming from.

If anyone remembers, when my sister died in '02, from the time I got home from the hospital until she was buried, this old clock on our mantle bonged loud and clear whenever my family was in the next room being especially sad. The clock was broken. It had not worked since we inherited it from my father-in-law 20 years earlier. It bonged and advanced in time at last, untouched, that weekend of my sister's death. We all felt it was her, and she was letting us know she was okay. She was smart and it would be like her to choose that clock to get thru to us. It's never made another sound or movement since.

I believe my father came to me in the form of a floral breeze that went right thru me.

It's like God, or somehow, they were allowed to come back to let us know they were okay. And then they went on.

DJ, thanks for the tip on the Sylvia Browne book. I've never read her and I get the feeling that she shoots from the hip talking to the audiences on talk shows. A friend of mine swears by her. Maybe she has that book you mentioned. Myself, I like George Anderson.

Paranormal stories involving clocks have always interested me. When we were kids, my cousin died in an accident. We were told he died instantly, but we all believe he lived about half an hour after it happened. That's what time the big grandfather clock stopped at my grandparents house. It was a clock that my grandfather had made a year or two before that and never had any problems. My cousin lived next door to our grandparents and was very close to them, so we all wonder if that was his way of telling them goodbye.

I wonder why clocks?
Supposedly electronics are easily manipulated.

As for Ms. Browne, I've not read her, as yet.

Ruth Montgomery had a theory about *walk-ins* (or is it *walk-ons*?)- where those who have given up on this life in this body relinquish it to another who wishes for another chance. I stopped reading her after that because that became her redundant theme.

Yes Yooper, they triangulated with lasers as far as they could project and *proved* there was a *perfect 180 degrees* but not everyone was satisfied. Another expert thinks the curve is so slight it would never be noticeable, but there nonetheless.

I'm still questioning what they triangulated from! If they were measuring the shape of the universe, then they would have to measure the "outside" of it, the part which defines the shape. How did they know they were measuring the outside of anything? I agree that a slight curve would be almost unnoticeable, that's what I was saying in an earlier post, for a slight curvature the difference between the arc length and the chord are negligible. A small interior angle would necessarily produce a very small arc segment or arc length.

Wasn't it tradition in some parts of the country to stop the clocks and cover the mirrors when someone died?
