Anne Sheen Lindsey
Does anyone know anything about this woman? Lizzie wrote to her from prison. I have never heard anything about her, and I am curious.

Yes
Anne Sheen, who married a guy named Lindsey, was a school friend of Lizzie. As a matter of fact she was related to Florence Brigham, curator of the fall river Historical Society before Michael Martins. Anne Sheen Lindsey, who changed her name to Anne Hawthorne was Florence's aunt. Sad Florence never wrote a book about what she knew. She was very close to the case and probably had secrets which will never be revealed.
Apparently, Anne was ashamed of her name "Sheen." For some reason she changed the name Sheen to Hawthorne, and once married became, Anne Hawthorne Lindsey.
Do you think Sheen sounded to Irish, or what. Other reasons are given to why she changed her name, but I don't believe it.
She was quite pretty when she was in school. Below are a couple of photographs, one of Anne Sheen and another of Anne Hawthorne Linsey. (same woman, of course)
Well, excuse.... ME.

You are very welcome....
As for Anne being ashamed of her name, it is something personal to me....or something I just said.
I'm the one who is guessing she was ashamed. Whether she was, I don''t know.
But why would one change their surname, especially since it was already changed when they got married. Of course, there could have been countless plausible reasons. If I'm not mistaken, Sheen is Irish. The Irish were looked down upon by many of the English in Fall River in the nineteenth century, so she did not want to bring attention to her Irish side.
Who knows????
Maybe she found out that her father was really John Hawthorne, the milkman?
The reason given, according to Parallel Lives, the book by Michael Martins, was that it was a very common name and she didn't like it. So....she changed it.

I would have loved to have read what she had to do say about Lizzie and the Borden family. And why was she ashamed about her name, to the point to where she changes it.mbhenty wrote:Yes![]()
