lizzie and the 4th of July

Post by snokkums »

With the 4th of July right around the corner, I was wondering about how Lizzie might have celebrated. I think I've been invited to a dozen BBQ's. Wonder if Lizzie went to any or got invited. Or maybe organized a town parade?

4th of July in New England...there's nothing like it. Nowadays we ALWAYS go to a parade, and there is usually a BBQ in the center of town (on "the commons"). I"ll bet it was the same back in 1892...(although I still can't see how women walked around in those long dresses!)

I bet she helped organize the parade!! Well, at least before the murders. Wonder how she spent it after the murders . I mean, no one wanted anything to do with her after the murders. So, I am wondering if she had a few real close friends over or spent it by her self.

Kinda off topic, but I always wonder WHY, with all that money, didn't Lizzie pull up stakes and get the heck out of Fall River...out of New England! She could have moved clear across country, bought a gorgeous house in Hollywood Hills, cavorted with Theda Bara, Rudolph Valentino, etc. They would not have known who she was, and even if she DID tell them, actors are a very forgiving and accepting group.

Why stay the rest of her life in a town where people would stare and whisper everywhere she went?

I read somewhere that she wanted to be in town when they found the "real" murderer, and she wanted to be able to walk down town with her head up. You know, the see I told you so! I didn't do it!! That and I think she felt like this my home too.

I'll bet if she had seen a therapist--a modern one---the move away from Fall River would have been supported.

Do you have a link for where she said she wanted to stay when the real murderer got caught? Did she do anything after the trial to try and continue the case? She certainly had the money to hire a private investigator. Reminds me of OJ...

It seems that if Lizzie remained in Fall River in order to have the last laugh, she didn't do much to promote a solution to the case. The Borden sisters advertised a reward for the person responsible for the murders, but I don't know if that was their idea, or if someone else suggested it, Jennings perhaps. That was in force shortly after the murders, but I don't know how long it remained in force.

I live near Gettysburg, and It always amazes me that during July 4th celebrations, reenactors walk around in wool dresses, full length, long sleeves...In 90+ temps.
