Hopefully this link works. Perhaps everyone already knows about it but in case not here is a link to a list and description of various axe murders in the US in the 1800s: www.murderbygaslight.com/2010/10/axe-murder.html. Unless everyone has already seen it, there are some new cases I have never heard of here.
In the for what it's worth department and other axe murders, I once lived in a town where there was one. Girl in the park killed with a hatchet just before dawn. Perpetrator never identified. Whoever did it took the axe with him a block or so and dumped it off in a pile of brush. The killer seemed to walk quite a distance in the town as he left clues for a number of blocks. Took a long time for the police to find the hatchet. In this day and age we could consider the killer was worried about fingerprints and so he took the hatchet. On the other hand he could have been stopped while carrying a bloody murder weapon. Even though the hatchet was eventually found there was no way to tie it to any person. Just some things to think about considering what we discuss here.

Some very interesting cases in the link you provided, irina, thanks for that.
I remember reading about the SmuttyNose murders years ago. An isolated island, the middle of the night, dreadful weather, and a deranged axe murderer on the loose! Sounds like something from a horror film, doesn't it?
