Sitting Room Blood Splatters

Post by camgarsky4 »

Assuming the killer stood within or behind the dining room door frame while delivering the hatchet blows to Andrew, the documented blood splatters located behind (west side or towards dining/parlor doorways) Andrew's head are as follows:

Source: "Case Against Lizzie Borden" author William Spencer. Appendix #3. Prelim Hearings, 23/94-27/98
1) On the wallpaper, above the head of the sofa, there were 2 large blood spots. The highest was 6' 3/4" from floor. The other was slightly lower. These were above Andrews head and a little behind (west of) the head. Spots were about 1/2" x 1/4". There was also one spot on the ceiling.
2) There were 7 drops on the parlor door and jamb. One was a large spot in the center division of the upper 2 panels of the door. The spots were 5-6 feet from the floor. The large spot was about the same size as the one above the sofa mentioned in #1
3) There were 2 spots on the ceiling above the head of the sofa, but it was not thought to be human blood. There was one spot of what was thought to be human blood on the ceiling. It was 12-18" to the west of the head. (my note...presumably this is same ceiling spot as mentioned in #1).
4) A spatter was found inside the dining room jamb. (author note...it was later found not to be blood).

Excluding a couple spots on the door to kitchen, the rest of the blood spots were found on the wall & picture frame directly behind the sofa or below the head on the sofa/floor.

I would presume that all 10 of the blood spots found behind/west of Andrews head were due to droplets spraying off the hatchet head as the blows are delivered. This begs the question, how much blood is likely to have gotten on the killer? Based on this information, I would think not much. Maybe a 4-5 spots similar to the size found on the parlor door? If that is the case and the killer used the coat as a 'body cover', cleaning up the mess was really only about folding up the coat, walking to the kitchen sink, washing off the hatchet, washing hands and face. So in this scenario, cleaning up would take 1-3 minutes maximum.

Purpose of this message is not to identify a killer, but to point out that its not a stretch that clean up could be reasonably completed in just a couple minutes and readily fit within the short timeframe of Andrews murder, whether the killer was Lizzie or someone else.
