Andrew's Era

Post by nbcatlover »

Today I discovered the Old Sturbridge Village site. They have have some very interesting articles on life in New England prior to the Civil War (mostly 1830-1850).

After you read a few of the articles on choosing a wife or holidays or life on a farm, you can figure out why Andrew was such a severe, humorless man. Christmas wasn't a holiday. Birthday presents weren't in until the 1850s and you usually got a book on morality. These were not fun people!

Check out the papers and articles and type in the word "dirty". The articles on dishwashing, forks, beards, and Dirty and Slovenly to a Degree make me glad I don't have throw my slop out the window and eat with my knife.

Have fun!
