I finally found a news item that says Lizzie visited the Chicago Exposition!
It's from the New York paper, Plattsburgh Sentinel, from December 1, 1893. I think The Expo closed before that, but the item seems to be a sort of "wrap-up" of Lizzie news for the year 1893.
When did the Expo close- anyone know?

Um, is this the same Chicago Exhibition where H.H. Holmes built and operated his "Castle of Death", as portrayed in the book "Devil in the White City"?............
I don't know if Lizzie did it and I give her the benefit of the doubt; but I just can't help noting the irony of (maybe) two notorious killers in the same place at the same time. Although anyone would have to admit that Holmes was far worse, much sicker and way more evil, than Lizzie ever was.

Could it be one of the witnesses, like Alice Russell? I recall reading that Russell had spent a few nights with Lizzie and Emma in the house right after the murders. Might she have discovered something? She did come forward about the dress; but could she have been afraid to go too far for some reason?.........
KT72, the Fairs are still going on, just not in America as of late. The last Fair held in America was in 1984, The New Orleans Expo. And the most recent one I found was held in Japan in 2005.

I wonder if it was the first 5 people on the premises directly after the murder that the police considered? Lizzie, Bridget, Mrs. Churchill, Alice Russell and Dr. Bowen? Or, if it they included others due to their relation with Lizzie?

But isn't there a feeling that John V. Morse was always involved somehow, whether before or after- knowing something?
I only called on Hiram Harrington because he was Lizzie's only suspect.
I figure she wouldn't point at him for no reason?
Personally I never felt that Bridget out and out lied to the police, more like she never told them all that she knew. But since she was around the house during the murders I can see why the police might include her on that list of the 5 liars. After the police dropped John Morse as a suspect, didn't they also sort of drop him as knowing anything with his airtight alibi? I would think he held a huge piece of the puzzle myself.

Really? I didn't know that (obviously ) You just never hear about them. GUess the nightly news is more preoccupied with other things.........
I wonder where Lizzie stayed if she went to the fair. Was it in H.H. Holmes Hotel of Horrors? Ok, I know that's pretty unlikely, but it's possible that she maybe walked past the place. Has it been really verified that she actually went? Or was it maybe just another newspaper account like the one about Lizzie getting married?

I find it pretty amazing to hear Lizzie was at the Columbian Expo in 1893. On June 20th of that year she is found not guilty. How long was the trip from Fall River to Chicago? A week by train? So Lizzie decides a trip to Chicago a few months after the trial?

I believe that too susan. I don't think that Bridget told the police everything. I think she was just very loyal to the family, and didn't want to speak against them.

Kat, that's a marvelous article. Have you ever learned anything more on who Caroline Borden was? The article says she was not a relative. However, Rebello has this on page 187:
"'Unbeknown' to Chicago: Miss Lizzie Borden has been doing the World's Fair with Miss Caroline Borden, formerly of this city, and Miss Alice Buck as traveling companions." Fall River Daily Globe, Tuesday, October 3, 1893: 8.
Note: Miss Caroline Borden was probably related to Lizzie. Miss Alice Buck was the daughter of Rev. Edwin Augustus Buck."
I can't find any other mention of her and she must have been somewhat close to Lizzie for them to be in Chicago together. The blurb in Rebello citing the FR Globe says that she was "formerly of this city".
That article also mentions Lizzie continued to attend church although not on a regular basis. Very interesting.

Found a Caroline Borden (b. 9/20/1829 in FR) on Rootsweb. Daughter of Richard Borden and Abigail Walker Borden. She's have been about 64 years old at the time of the fair. Doesn't seem likely she'd be there with Lizzie.

Lizzie and company just made it to the fair in time. The official closing ceremony was October 30, 1893. Some of the exhibits, like the Ferris Wheel, survived for a while after the closing.
I also note the absence on the visit of Emma. That may be explained in that someone had to be around Maplecroft as the Borden sisters had barely moved in. According to Rebello (p286) they purchased Maplecroft in July but didn't begin moving in until September. He cites a NY Times article dated September 10th covering the move of the furnishings to Maplecroft.
Rebello's FR Globe article is dated October 3rd and indicates they were already there in Chicago so it doesn't leave much time for Lizzie to be at Maplecroft before taking off for the fair.

About the only thing left from the Expo is the fine arts building. All the buildings were made of a fiber reinforced plaster of paris material as the edifices were just temporary , but due to the extreme value of some of the fine art exhibited, the art galleries had to be constructed by and with the usual building code and materials. It is I believe now a part of the University of Chicago campus. I have collected 1893 Expo for some years. It would sure be great to see Lizzie in the crowd of all the old photos. I've got a "Caroline Borden" whom I had written next to the name "Carrie." If that helps.
She is sisters wth Anna H. Borden, if that rings any bells?
They are circled by me in my book but...why were we looking them up in the past?
They are daughters of Thomas J. Borden and his wife, Mary E. Hill.
His father was Col. Richard Borden.
I don't have her birthdate but she is listed as 9th generation, as is Lizzie.
Carrie L. Borden lived at 492 Rock - This may be the Carrie “Lindley” Borden who went on the Grand Tour with Lizzie in 1890).
Later travels Lizzie took were with a Caroline Borden and the 1926 Directory has:
Caroline Borden, widow of Eric W. 739 Rock
Caroline F. Borden 495 So. Beach
Caroline L. Borden Clerk in City Hall
She and her sister Anna I see are in Rebello's book, page 20 & 21.
They did go to Europe with Lizzie. They were part of that reception given by the Church members upon their return.
They are not in Lizzie's Will, tho.

I find your Caroline as Aunt to this "Caroline." That Caroline is sister to Thomas- both children of Col. Richard.
It doesn't give any dates on her at all- so that is helpful.
It also doesn't show *Aunt Caroline* as married by 1877.
I think when Kat & I were gathering info for the Hatchet article on Morse I researched Morse family members in the Midwest. Difficult to find any except for the ones who lived in Edina, MN. True, there were some in Illinois, but if there still are, I couldn't locate any. We may have found some in California who Kat had contact with.
There was no mention anywhere of Lizzie contacting any of these relatives. Perhaps the niece in Minnesota???

Yes, John Morse made several trips to Fall River and was visiting at the time of the murders. He lived in Hastings, Iowa. Went to FR to sell some horses. If you are asking if he was visiting during the World Fair, I don't know.
