Fruits and vegetables don't have many calories so load up on that. Fat has twice as many calories per gram as protein or carbs. Thats why high-fat junk food packs on the pounds. Exercise six days a week, not three. For instance, chest and upper back on Mondays and Thursdays, arms and shoulders on Tuesdays and Fridays and legs and lower back on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Do crunches and leg lifts every day to strengthen your abs. Take Sundays off and let your whole body relax.
Buy a book on stretching like, "New York City Ballet Workout" by Peter Martins (William Morrow and Company, Inc.) to keep you supple and lean. It is a very good book.
Dave Draper's, "Your Body Revival" really cuts through the dieting myths and crap and doesn't pull any punches. I love this book! It tells it like it is.
Allan Lakein's book, "How To Get Control of Your Time and Your Life" is excellent in teaching you how to get important things done in our lives.
David Allen's book, "Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity" is supposed to be real good too but I've never read it.
"The Power of Focus" by John Canfield and others is a top book on the art of focusing in on what is important.
Franklin Covey has a wonderful program to get you organized. It's working wonders in my life, Big Time! The secret to getting organized boils down to knowing the difference between what is urgent and what is important. Important matters seldom make a lot of noise to get our attention while urgent matters, though screaming for attention, are seldom important. Never schedual more that 50-60% of your day for important projects. That way you will always have time to deal with the emergencies that will pop up without your important projects getting derailed or pushed to "another day."

Oh wow, Steve, thanks for all the helpful tips and books. I actually started in January lifting weights, upper body, small weight....6lbs, and when I got comfortable with that went up, I'm up to 10lbs now and really feel the difference! Also been doing a whole lot more walking, along with some stretching exercises. I've only lost 10lbs but sure do feel different. And am wearing clothes that were too snug on me before. That's a great incentive. Need to do the crunches though and alot more veggies! Thanks for the help, and the reminders! I have also noticed an increase in energy, that's a big plus!

Hey Steve- have you missed any resolutions or do you not make them?
I don't like to make resolutions in the true sense of the word as far as "new years," but I make changes as needed, when needed. I don't really wait until January 01, although I do get a helpful boost from that date. All of the projects I set out to do I'm still working on and making gradual progress on all of them except my voice. I haven't read my books on that yet. I would love to hire a professional voice teacher but I don't have the time right now. I'll add it in as other projects get completed.
My organization progress has been very good. I've learned a lot and making big changes. I'm getting important things done while ignoring the urgent things that are not important. Franklin Covey has made a major change in my life.
I'm also working on vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and writing/word structure. I want to be able to write one day, poetry and such. I'm also working on "personal image" so I don't move like a bull in a china shop or look like someone who is going to break you in half. I want to be "approachable" to people. I recently mastered my handshake so I no longer hurt people. A soft gentle pressure is automatic now and I'm thrilled about that! Yessss!
In June I will begin reading four biographies that were written about an actress friend of mine. I want to learn more about her life, her work, to understand her better. I never knew she was sick until the day she died. Even after all these years I still find myself opening the mail box hoping to find a letter from her and then I suddenly remember that she is gone. I never had the chance to tell her goodbye. I miss her. I miss her something awful.
When I'm done with that I'm going to try and find a way of transfering my Georgia Browns, and other LP's, onto CD. I have a lot of good music I want to listen too without having to use the turntable. Today's music is not my cup of tea.
After that I rebuild my garage and a few minor projects all before the end of this year. When you get control of your time you can get important things done in your life. I'm loving it.

I seem to live more like day-to-day.
I like long phone calls and like the surprise of a voice from far away, like Sunday. That was a good 2 hours conversation with a friend.
Would we be surprised if we ever met you?
What I do is to take my lifes goals and break them down into this years goals, then into monthly goals, then into weekly goals and finally today's goals. So everyday I'm working on my life-long goals. After I posted the above comments I realized I had not finished cleaning my bookshelves and living room so I took a day off from the net to get that done. Those are part of my goals. Until I recently filled out a Weekly Time Recorder I had no idea I was spending so much time on the net.
Since my sister finally got a computer she and I hardly ever talk by phone. We email each other almost every day. Long telephone conversations are hard on me. I have an automatic habit of raising my voice up an octave when answering the phone to kill the coldness and put more of a "friendly" tone into my voice. Very important for business! After a few minutes my vocal cords get tired and I drop into my normal register and sound like a bear on a major grump.
Would you be surprised if you met me? No, I don't think so. I'm just the way I described myself. Just a big muscled-up guy with a cold voice, but friendly.

You're welcome, Pam. I'm happy for you!
There are few things that feel better than getting control of our weight and energy. It makes everything else flow so much easier. Have you read the piece on MSNBC news about a woman who lost 70lbs. and keeps it off? You ought to look it over. I think it is called "Former Fat Girl." It is an exclusive article written for Newsweek online. It comes from the book the lady wrote about her efforts to get the jelly belly off and keep it off. A real good article.
Veggies are very low in calories (a cucumber has about 28 calories, a cup of carrots 60, for instance) and packed with nutrition, fiber, etc. Junk food is loaded full of high-calorie fat. One sausage McMuffin with egg from McDonald's has 450 calories, and their Big Breakfast has 780 calories, and I think that is without the grease-cooked hash browns! Almost all of those calories are from fat! Junk food is not where it's at.
Keep up the good work, Pam. I'll be pulling for you.

I just saw on the local news that there's a DR. here who can change the vocal chords by adding fat sucked from your body (navel area) and injecting it. It plumps them up and changes pitch. They can also use Botox or something else- I can't remember what. Surgery?
They start with a voice coach first, then assess from there.

Thank's Kat. I never heard of that procedure. I'll look it up. I always knew I'd be talking through my navel one day.Kat @ Tue May 01, 2007 7:18 pm wrote:I just saw on the local news that there's a DR. here who can change the vocal chords by adding fat sucked from your body (navel area) and injecting it. No I was "squeak squeak,"... ahemm, sorry, let me clear my throat... hmmm, now that's better. No like I was trying to say I was engrossed in a book on organization that I mentioned above, "Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity." I bought it and it has the answers I've been looking for all these years. David Allen explains why most organization programs don't work and what to do about it. I'm setting up my office organization to mate up with my Franklin-Covey "on the road" organization so I cover the whole spectrum. It has been a major eye opener for me and now everything is jelling. It feels like someone turned on a light.
