The November 2007 issue of The Hatchet: Journal of Lizzie Borden Studies has been placed ONLINE for subscribers.

This issue is extra special as it includes a story about the discovery of the new Andrew image, news, information, and images not published elsewhere---and a few surprises as well.

Plus we have a fabulous piece on Pete Peterson by journalist Linda Rodrigues. Other pieces are included by Borden historians and forum members---Shelley Dziedzic, Sherry Chapman, Richard Behrens, Denise Noe, Mary Elizabeth Naugle, Douglas Walters, and Michael Brimbau.

I went to order the color Lulu copy, and it says it's no longer available - are they no longer printing color copies of The Hatchet? The b&w one seems to be available.

Try it now Bob. When I put the journal on LuLu this time, they were having problems with the buttons and banners. That is now fixed and I repaired the links. You can purchase from the membership page now. Thanks for letting me know!

Well, it was really hard to keep my mouth shut about the Pete Peterson story for months!
You guys have been asking about Arnold Brown's story and what was its source- there you have it- finally!

And Bill Pavao let us borrow and read The Peterson Key, that Pete gave him.
Peterson's wife's family were out of Ellen Eagan.

It is a much more compelling story without all of Brown's embellishments, isn't it? And, more believeable that way as well.

I didn't find it much more credible than Brown's version---it seems another mark against Brown that he also got Peterson's story so wrong.

I found tons of errors in his story. Ellan Eagan only told the authorities about throwing up in what turned out to be the Kelly yard, nothing about seeing a man leaving the Borden yard. Bridget did not work for rich people in Newport. JVM did not stay on in Fall River all that time...he went back west & was all over the place during that period, even in California. There is are other things, but not having it in front of me I can't recall.

I see Rebello pointed out his errors, even tho he liked Peterson.

The whole thing just makes Rebello even more my hero

Oh yeah...I forgot the most glaring discrepancy--

Peterson said Ellen was talking to Bridget & heard the City Hall bell ring for 11 a.m. According to Bridget, she had long been inside & was up in her room when she heard the clock strike 11.

I'll probably be still remembering these things & I won't be here to post them...

Anyway, the whole thing sounded like rumors & tales made even worse by each passing telling.

It's a different way of looking at things. What if Bridget was not upstairs in her room, etc.
Also, Ellen might have had several talks with the police that did not make it into the Witness Statements. Her inquest appearance didn't make it into that document. She was called for, and even her name was misspelled to a man's name (Allen) ...

I did start checking some of his facts but decided to wait a while for Peterson's version to sink in.

Len did lend us his Ellen Eagan file, also. We've not touched it yet other than read thru it.

Did you notice Billie did not STINK? He smelled like manure...

What a fabulous issue, Stef! Your find of Andrew's new photograph is exciting! I ordered my color issue from Lulu, and I will read the entire magazine when it arrives. I can't wait to sink my teeth into your Peterson article, Kat!

Just when I think, "Oh, this issue has to be the best!", danged if you don't put out the next fantastic issue. Great stuff!

So far, this issue of The Hatchet is absolutely wonderful!!! I haven't had a chance to read through the entire issue, yet, however, I am looking forward to doing so. I had to read the Pete Peterson article first and haven't had time, yet, to read much of the other articles.

Awww, but manure does stink, Kat, but not like a stink you can't describe. It's funny you mentioned this, because when I did a quick read through this article, the very first thing that stood out for me was this man's smell. The whole Arnold Brown story was tied together with this stink you can't describe; that is the only thing that Ellan Eagan and Henry Hawthorne had for identifying Bill Borden as the murderer.

I also picked up on the same things Tina-Kate picked up on. After I finish work, today, I plan on doing a more in-depth reading of this article, and I will then most likely have more to say.

Like the David Anthony story, there are many pieces missing in the "Bill" Borden story. A quick look at the Fall River directories for 1900 and 1901 list the border at 219 New Boston Road as "Willie H." Borden. He's listed as a driver in 1900 and a teamster in 1901. Is this a different William Borden from the William "S." Borden found hangin on New Boston Road? What a coincidence...

While Morse returned to Iowa after the trial, it is not certain that he remained there. It is probable that he travelled back east on occasion without a trace because of his tendency to stay in other people's homes. He was involved in the purchase of a piece of property in Fairhaven with an Amos R. Caswell in 1906 from George H. Howland. It is unclear whether Morse was present or if his portion of the transaction was concluded from a distance as the deed lists him as John V. Morse of Iowa. It does indicate Uncle John's continued interest in this area.

This is another story which requires more factual research. Thanks for presenting "Pete" Peterson's view.

Yes it's interesting, to say the least.

I'll be clear that I only introduced the series of articles and gathered Len's and Bill's and Linda's memories of Pete Peterson, and found in obits that Brown & Peterson died just 2 months apart.
Otherwise, the whole story and all the text was written by Linda Rodrigues- who is now an editor at New Bedford's Standard Times. (Southcoast Today) She's an award-winning journalist, and a wonderful person!

Linda Rodrigues did a great job, but it was easy to see that there were differences in the way Arnold Brown presented the information and the way Linda received it from Pete.

Keep bringing us the different perspectives. Great job.

P.S. I haven't gotten over my initial impression that young Andrew Borden's portrait somehow reminds me of George Washington. There's a lot more stuff out there. In fact, it's getting so that it's almost respectable to admit a grandmother or aunt, etc., was an acquaintance of Lizzie.

When it was my turn to be interviewed for the documentary video Lizzie Borden Had An Axe, near the end I gave a plea to Fall Riverites and surrounding areas to please look in attics and trunks and bring in Borden case memorabilia to the FRHS.
Of course, that was cut out.

TK- I thought so too, and figured it was my only shot.
They filmed Stef and myself each for over an hour, but as you see they only used each of us about 90 seconds.
