I was driving through the center of the state, Massachusetts, and my pup, Onsloe, kept crying and crying. Finally I realized what he wanted. The Pine Ridge Pet Cemetery was down the road and he wanted to stop and pay his respects to Igloo. Igloo was polar explorer Richard Byrd's pet dog. Richard Evelyn Byrd laid claim to being the first man to fly over the North and South poles. Igloo accompanied him on some of his expeditions.

Onsloe did not realize that Lizzie Borden had pet dogs until I told him, at which time he insisted on visiting Lizzie's dog's grave also. And so we did.

What a sweet heart-wrenching story, MB! Bless your heart for stopping and allowing Onsloe to visit his old friend; I'm glad he now knows about Lizzie's dogs and had the opportunity to visit their grave site as well.

I hope Onsloe feels much better this evening.

BTW: Onsloe is such a cutie, no wonder you adore him! Thanks for posting a picture of him beside Igloo's grave stone.

Thanks twins. I know this is a Lizzie Borden thread, so here is Lizzie's doggie grave.

While we were walking through the yard we discovered all sorts of interesting and cute pet names. Most were not as formal or ostentatious as Lizzie's pups. Some were very interesting. I came to this one tiny stone. Flat on the ground and a bit skewed since a big tree was growing nearby and had lifted it a bit. Bronze plaque on it read "Teddy 1899 to 1907" So I called my friend to come over and check it out. It was so delightful and modest. By the time she came over to look at it Onsloe had pooped on it. Poor Teddy. Of course I cleaned it up. But apparently Onsloe did not care for Teddy. Teddy must have been a cat.

The photo you posted of Onsloe sitting beside the grave stone of Lizzie’s dogs, is the best! Onsloe is looking at the stone as if to say, ‘Who in the heck are these guys?’

BTW, the first time I read your last post, I was taking a sip of my coffee, when I got to the part of ‘Onsloe had pooped on it’. I almost couldn’t hold the coffee in my mouth, due to suppressing a laugh!

What manner of dog is Onsloe? He cuts a fine figure.

Those pet names suggest Lizzie was very Anglophile, or rather, hankering after romantic Hibernia. Perhaps she revisited Scotland. Emma came, didn't she, somewhen.

These posts had me looking at the photo of Lizzie with her dog on her lap - is that some kind of Boston Wotnot? - then had me thinking she could only be right-handed to hold her dog like that... And in other photos she holds her cane in a right-handed way and a book in a right-handed way, and the newspaper illustrators all seem to have her holding her fan in the right hand... Is it fair to say the expert stuff tends to favour a right-handed killer..?

Glad I could make you smile, Twins. The forum has been very quite lately so I thought I would tease it with a dog story. Gladden's me you liked it.

Yes I-Reader. George is a cutie pie. Cavalier Spaniels have just started becoming very popular here in the states.

My dog's pedigree and lineage is Irish. I lean towards GB doggies. My first dog was a scottie.(black) Her name was Henty. Ergo, MBHenty. She was named after George Alfred Henty, a British Victorian writer of boy books. What a hand full she was. In the novel Lizzie Borden the Girl with the Pansy Pin Lizzie has a dog named Henty... a scottie. Of course Lizzie never had a scottie....so I gave her one.

Onsloe is Soft coat Wheaton Terrier. An Irish bread. He's my third Wheaton. My first Wheaton was named Shannon, then there was Dougal, (got him straight off the boat from Ireland) named after Father Dougal on the comedy FATHER TED, and now we have Onsloe, named after Onsloe from the comedy, KEEPING UP APPEARANCES.

To keep things interesting, below is a segment from the comedy Father Ted. In the scene Father Ted and Father Dougal are on holiday. They are sitting in a caravan and staring out the window. In the distance there is a field full of cows. Apparently Father Dougal, who is a complete moron.....but charming, endearing, and lovable, has a problem with what he sees. Father Ted tries to explain it to him..........Love Father Ted.

Here, Father Ted was given a new car which he will raffle off for charity. The car has a dent and Father Ted and Dougal try to fix it.

Love British humor. Just cannot be duplicated here in the states. When American's try it, it just doesn't come off the same.

Oh-my-goodness you have Father Ted?!?!? Craggy Island, Tunnel of Goats, Mrs Doyle and dim Dougal? Crilley and Dougal entering Eurovision with 'My Little Pony'? Now I wouldn't have expected that to travel well. It's still shown pretty much every night even after all this time. We know them by heart they're so indelibly funny.

Bishop: So Father do you ever have any doubts? Is your faith ever tested? Any trouble
you've been having with beliefs or anything like that?
Dougal: Well you know the way God made us and he's looking down at us from Heaven -
Bishop: Yes.
Dougal: And then his son came down and saved everyone and all that -

Blackadder and Father Ted are probably our top two most beloved comedies.

Dougal - Ardal O'Hanlan - just made a series where he travels Ireland to show us cultural oddities and stunning scenery - Ireland with Ardal O'Hanlan, worth looking out for.

Probably one of my all time favorites.......Father Ted.

Most of our British broadcasting comes to us through PBS. I must have watched every episode of ARE YOU BEING SERVED ten times or more. For one short season PBS had Ardal on as MY HERO. It was like Father Dougal from another planet.

When I go off in the summer on my sailboat to far off places, I make certain to bring my Father Ted DVDs with me. (along with 'Gunsmoke') A citrusy red sunset over a calm, serene New England harbor is just not the same without an episode of Father Ted to top off the evening.

Unlike the Vicar of Dibley, which I found religiously offensive at times, Father Ted pokes fun at priests and church goers.....not the All Mighty himself. The Vicar pushed the envelope at times. But how can you not love Owen, Jim, and Alice. The real guns behind the success of Geraldine Granger. (or the character, there-of)

Another series I found hilarious was The Old Guys, with Roger Lloyde Pack and the genius of straight man Clive Swift.

My new favorite is Vicious...with Ian McKellen. Love it, love it.

MB: I do enjoy your Onsloe stories, very much. I had to chuckle again today when I read it. I can't help it; guess, I just have a weird sense of humor! So, Teddy must have been a cat, huh. Poor Teddy.

I enjoy both dogs and cats, although I am drawn to cats more than dogs. Maybe it stems back to when I was around 17 years old. I have previously mentioned on the forum that I grew up on a farm. One day, I had just gotten home from town, after running an errand for my mother, when she ask me if I would go get 8 dozen eggs. We obtained our eggs from a neighbor, who lived a short distance from us. After the eggs were paid for and packed up in a box, I was walking to the car, carrying the 8 dozen eggs, when their big black Labrador Retriever came up behind me, and bit me in the back of my right leg! The scars are still faintly visible. There are two of them; one is a round hole where a tooth when straight in, and the other scar is about 2 inches long, where a tooth scraped across my leg, just under the calf. This past October I had the opportunity to see this neighbor lady, and she told me that the dog had bit a guy a couple of months it had bitten me, and they had a choice but to put it down.

Yes, we sure do, isn't that amazing? Actually, I enjoy it when we get off topic, because we get to know other members on a more personal level. I think it is good to see each other as human beings, who have a life outside of the forum.

I must confess that I have not heard of Father Ted before. Judging from the videos you posted, I think I need to check out a few more that are on YouTube.

Twins, I'm wondering if you know about Poldark..?

It's the big BBC 'heritage drama' of the past two winters - a powerful dynastic story about the Cornish at the close of the eighteenth century. I wonder if you'd really enjoy it, with your family roots being Cornish. Visually it's just stunning, utterly stunning - it's all filmed in Cornwall - often on the headlands overlooking the ocean. We're all just in love with it. It's based on the equally loved novels of Winston Graham. There's wrecking and romancing and mining and fighting and drama aplenty and gorgeous settings...
It seems as if it is being shown in the States - on something called 'Masterpiece'?

It was originally dramatised in the late 'seventies - BBC Sunday tea-time, highlight of the week drama. 'Poldark' single-handedly put Cornwall back on the tourist-map and upped the price of Cornish property! Forty-five years later when the BBC announced it was filming 'Poldark' again there was shock and outcry - how could they improve on something as sacrosanct as that drama-series. How could there ever be another Ross Poldark?

Well Aidan Turner is doing 'quite well'. Most of the women in the British Isles are in love with him. When he stripped off his shirt to mow a field it caused the biggest fuss since Colin Firth swam a lake in 'Pride and Prejudice' twenty years ago. Anyways, the whole thing is really good.

I believe it was a key moment in British-American history. The land-owners were closing the mines and destroying the Cornish, who have always been a very distinct people, and it was then that so many emigrated to the States. 'Poldark' is set against that fight for survival.
