friendship with Nance

Post by Angel »

Does anyone know why Nance and Lizzie seem to have had some kind of relationship for only a couple of years? What happened after that? Was there some parting of the ways like with Emma?

I had assumed that as an actor, Nance went where the work was and also toured and such. When was Nance in Australia, and for how long?
Now if they remained the kind of friends who wrote each other- that would be interesting, but supposedly Nance says they didn't write.

Emma says Lizzie and Nance enjoyed a long friendship, yet Nance refers to them as ships passing in the night...

Casebook, Williams, pg. 253:

..."'One of the stories that has been going the rounds in connection with my sister deals with Nance O'Neil, the actress.

'This report is to the effect that Nance O'Neil met my sister in another city, became intimately acquainted with her, and maintained this friendliness until she discovered that the Lizbeth Borden she knew was none other than Lizzie Borden, the woman who had been tried on a charge of murder.

'I know such a tale to be absolutely unfounded. Nance O'Neil has for years been a close friend of Lizzie, and she holds that relation to this very day.'" --Sunday Post, April 13, 1913.
....

Sourcebook, Kent, pg. 346:
"No letters were exchanged in the nearly quarter of a century which has elapsed since Miss Borden and Miss O'Neil bade each other good-by.

'I am afraid I am a rather poor correspondent,' said the actress, flicking an ash from her cigarette into a tray of a red Chinese lacquer stand - gorgeous Chinese lacquer and carvings, embroideries and jade dominated the whole room.

'We were like ships that pass in the night and speak each other [sic] in passing.'" --New Bedford Standard, June 4, 1927.

--Of course, anyone can find more info and prove or disprove this- I am merely supplying a reference source for further study and giving my opinion.

I myself am somewhat confused about the relationship ...

Did Lizzie have a different (perhaps one-sided?) perspective of their friendship? Or were the newpapers printing gossip - possibly initiated by Lizzie to feel "popular"? WHO is telling the truth?

(From LB Sourcebook p.346)

Excerpt from Nance O' Neil interview a week after Lizzie's death:

"She mentioned that Miss Borden was once a guest for a few days at her country place at Tyngsboro, not far from Lowell. Reports that she had spent some time at the Borden home at Fall River, or that she had ever met Miss Emma Borden, she characterized as an error"

BUT - then I see this:

(LB Sourcebook p.329 - a few days after Emma moved out)

"When Miss O'Neil came to this city with her company early this season she was entertained by Miss Borden. Not only was Miss O'Neil most hospitably treated, but her whole company dined at Miss Borden's table."

"Later, when Miss O'Neil came here and gave an impersonation of "Queen Elizabeth" which startled most people but pleased others, Miss Borden's carriage awaited her after the play, and together they went to Miss Borden's home. Miss O'Neil was entertained there, and it was not long after this entertainment that Miss Emma and her sister broke."
